Beck, Cruz score in Mustangs' 3-2 regional loss to Colorado School of Mines

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Lexi Beck and Isabella Cruz posted two first half goals to give Midwestern State the leg up in the first round of the NCAA Championships Friday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium, but No. 20-ranked Colorado School of Mines fought back to bag two second half goals.

The Orediggers sealed the deal in the final minute of the first overtime period to win 3-2 and earn a second round meeting with UC-Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Beck posted her second straight match with the opening goal in the sixth minute of play against the Mines. Alyssa Salinas sent a corner kick into the box, which the defense cleared to the top of the box. Beck then settled the ball past one defender, touched around another and blasted it past Colorado School of Mines' goalkeeper Sierra Roth. The freshman earned her fourth goal of the season and totaled 10 points.
 
Cruz' third goal of the year was also off Salinas' corner. Cruz rose above her defender to head the ball into the upper right corner of the goal. The Mustangs were up by two with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.
 
Amena Nelson brought the Orediggers closer with her 61st minute score. The redshirt gained her fourth goal of the season on a rebound shot from a teammate that Midwestern State goalkeeper Lauren Freeman pushed away.
 
Eliot Edwards forced overtime with just over four minutes remaining. The midfielder's header off a long-range throw-in sailed over Freeman's fingertips.  Ellise Putnam then volleyed in a clearance by Colorado School of Mines' defense with 29 seconds left in overtime to secure the 3-2 victory.
 
The Orediggers outshot MSU 17-7 placing seven shots on goal. Midwestern State put three shots on frame, while Freeman made four saves. Roth only had one stop in 99 minutes.

Colorado School of Mines moves on to face UC-Colorado Springs in the second round.

Midwestern State posted its best winning percentage since 2013 finishing with a 12-5-3 record (.675) and qualified for the NCAA postseason tournament for the first time since 2017.
