Cold-shooting Mustangs fall to Minnesota-Crookston, 68-60

ABERDEEN, South Dakota -- Midwestern State's shooting woes continued in the finale of the Dacotah Bank Thanksgiving Classic Saturday afternoon at Wachs Arena.

The Mustangs shot a season low 30.3 percent from the field in a 68-60 loss to Minnesota Crookston to take a third-straight loss to fall to 2-4.

The shooting performance was the worst since MSU hit 28.4 percent of its shot in a 74-67 loss at Angelo State on Feb. 4, 2017.

The Mustangs also struggled from the arc hitting at an 18.5-percent clip (5-for-27) hitting the second fewest 3-pointers under Justin Leslie. MSU knocked down four triples in 23 attempts (17.4 percent) in a 59-44 win at UT Tyler on Jan. 2, 2020.

And despite shooting 21.9 percent from the field, the Mustangs found a way to stay close throughout much of the opening half.

Terrell Wilson scored half of his game-high 16 points during a one-minute stretch in the first half. The junior from Houston followed a runner in the lane with consecutive 3-pointers to give the Mustangs their largest lead of the game at 11-7 with 12:12 to play in the first half.

After a five-point spurt by Minnesota Crookston junior Ethan Channel gave the Golden Eagles a brief one-point lead, MSU's Luke Hamilton buried a 3-pointers to push the Mustangs ahead 18-16 with 7:47 to go in the first half. It would be their last lead of the afternoon.

UM-Crookston rattled off the next eight points, then Brian Sitzmann buried a triple from the top of the key before Nathaniel Powell capped a 13-3 run with a two-handed dunk to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 29-21 at the half.

Midwestern State constructed three solid runs in the second half, but each time the Golden Eagles answered with a 3-pointer.

MSU senior John Weger ignited a 9-0 run by hitting three free throws just over six minutes into the second before Jordan Teal battled for a layup and Amaechi Chukwu banked in a triple just to the left of the top of the key to pull the Mustangs to within 39-36 with 12:13 to play.

But Sitzmann hit another 3-pointer to start a 12-2 run for UMC then bookended it with a layup to push the Golden Eagles' lead back to 13 points at 51-38 with 8:58 to play.

Midwestern State answered by scoring the next eight points punctuated by Weger's three-point play to pull MSU back to within five at 51-46 with 7:14 to go.

But, once again, Minnesota-Crookston's Uzo Dibiamaka hit a 3-pointers to start a 9-2 run to extend the lead back out to 12 with 4:42 to play.

Midwestern State battled back within six points on two occasions over the closing minutes, but could get no closer.

Wilson finished the night going 7-for-14 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers, while Carter also hit on seven of his 14 shots to close with 15 points and posting a plus/minus of plus-5 to lead the Mustangs for the second consecutive game.

The rest of the team shot 15.8 percent from the field going 6-of-38.

Channel connected on three 3-pointers to lead Minnesota-Crookston with 14 points, while Dibiamaka also knocked down three triples to finish with 12 points as the Golden Eagles improved to 4-3 on the season.

Midwestern State hits the road to take on Cameron Tuesday night in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
