LAWTON, Okla. – Midwestern State didn't make it pretty Tuesday night at Aggie Gym.
The Mustangs just couldn't find the range from tip to buzzer, but still found a way to snap a three-game slide and beat Cameron 71-66.
"It was disappointing to shoot it so poorly, but we just have to continue to train the right way on a daily basis," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "We have a philosophy to get the ball inside and hunt for those 3s. There were about 10 of them that I would put a lot of stock in one of them dropping."
The Mustangs managed to hit just four of their 29 attempts from beyond the arc and fell behind by eight points early in the second half.
"We didn't win many metrics tonight, but we found margins for error," Leslie said. "We took over the glass in the second and you just felt that momentum was going our way. And the shots didn't go. I was proud of the team for fighting through that."
Midwestern State clamped down on the defensive end allowing just two field goals during a 6-minute stretch following CU freshman Joshua Fanuiel's layup with 8 ½ minutes to play to stake the Aggies to a 58-53 lead.
Even though the Mustangs were not connecting on many shots from the beyond the arc, they continued to spread the floor allowing senior forward
Jermane Carter to pay his game in the middle of the floor.
During the critical 6-minute stretch, Carter worked for seven of his 19 points as part of a 12-4 run as the Mustangs raced to a four-point lead.
Freshman
Jordan Teal also came up big for the Mustangs, who buried a rare 3-points from the left wing and got the rim to help MSU take a 65-61 lead with 2:39 to play.
"They were buying in and spacing the floor. That allowed
Jermane Carter to have the middle of the floor to himself," Leslie said.
Teal matched Carter with team-high honors finishing with a career-best 19 points off the bench. Senior
John Weger also delivered a strong effort with six points and three rebounds leading the Mustangs to a plus-13 advantage in his 17 minutes of court time.
"Those two gave us a huge lift off of the bench tonight. They gave us an incredible effort on the defensive and created for us on the offensive end of the floor," Leslie said.
Junior
Terrell Wilson added 13 points for MSU, while
Jalin Brown delivered an all-around effort with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Junior Brock Schreiner poured in 28 points and hit four 3-pointers to lead the Aggies, who fell to 1-3.
Midwestern State (3-4) continues on the road for a non-conference matchup against Oklahoma Christian Thursday night at Payne Athletic Center in Oklahoma City. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
