Mustangs fall 1-0 to Cal Poly Pomona in second round of NCAA championships

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- For the third straight year, Midwestern State falls in the second round of the NCAA Division II Championship. The Mustangs could not find the equalizer to Cal Poly Pomona's Eduardo Faria goal in the first half. MSU concludes the 2021 season at 16-3-1 and as Lone Star Conference regular season title holders and LSC Tournament champions.

"You get this deep in the tournament and restarts like the throw can really hurt you," said Head Coach Michael Meachum. "Unfortunately for us today, a restart hurt us."

The Broncos used a long throw-in to initiate the score with Melvyn Perez Cortez launching the ball into the Mustangs' box. Faria shook off his defender and headed the ball down past Marc-Antoine Huzen.

Midwestern State searched for the equalizer, but came up empty handed through both the first and second halves. The home side outshot CPP 16 to 13 but collected only three shots on goal. Huzen was a big factor for MSU, making seven saves in 90 minutes. Jordan Aldama tallied three stops.

Mere Escobar put up four attempts at goal, including a rocket in the 76th minute that barely skimmed over the cross bar. James Doyle and Julian Barajas each tallied three shots for the Mustangs. Paul Henschke took five shots for Cal Poly Pomona and landed two on frame.

Midwestern State posted its best record since 2018, going 16-3-1 (.825) on the season. The Mustangs registered first place finishes in both the Lone Star Conference season and tournament, a feat they have not done since 2017.
