Escobar bags brace in Mustangs 3-2 double OT LSC win over Oklahoma Christian

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Stang Park hosted a thrilling Lone Star Conference match between No. 11 Midwestern State and Oklahoma Christian. Pushed into double overtime, Mere Escobar landed the game-clinching penalty kick in the 106th minute. With the 3-2 victory, the Mustangs move to 9-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

MSU and OC played to a scoreless first half with the Eagles outshooting the Mustangs 6-2. Marc-Antoine Huzen made two stops to keep the score even.

Shortly into the second half, John Osadolor Ighede collected his third notch of the season with the assist by Miguel Fonseca. Midwestern State rebounded ten minutes later with a tally of their own. Trevor Amann started the sequence with a long pass to Julian Barajas, who was streaming down the left sideline. The senior pushed his way into Oklahoma Christian's box and chipped the ball over Anthony Trabichet to find Escobar in front of the wide open goal. Escobar collected his fifth goal of the year and Barajas earned his fourth helper.

Amann grabbed the third straight match with a goal in the 62nd minute. Escobar passed to the senior running down the line, who was able to turn one defender and slip it past the OC keeper. The forward now has nine goals and 21 points for the Mustangs.

With time winding down, the home side thought they were in the clear until Osadolor Ighede made his second strike of the match. With less than five minutes left to play, MSU could not find the go-ahead goal and headed into overtime.

Midwestern State collected eight shots in the second period while Oklahoma Christian attempted 11. Huzen added two saves to his sheet and Trabichet gained one.

The two teams were scoreless through the first overtime period and it looked to be that way for the second until the referee called a handball in the box against an OC defender. Escobar stepped up to land his third penalty kick of the season and second tally of the night. The Mustangs walked away with the 3-2 win. Escobar and Amann led the offensive charge with four shots each. Osadolor Ighede took five tries for the visitors and Joep Claassen recorded four.

Midwestern State continues Lone Star Conference play next week. The team takes on Lubbock Christian at LCU Soccer Field on Saturday, Oct. 16. The conference match kicks off at 7 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
