WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Alex Serna had quite the night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum as the freshman registered a career-high 14 kills to lead both Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce. After the Mustangs secured the first set, the Lions ran away with the next three to claim the 3-1 victory (25-20, 15-25, 21-25, 21-25). MSU falls to a 3-12 record on the year, going 1-6 in Lone Star Conference play.
"Great teams do the small things consistently and well," explained Head Coach
Valerie Armstrong. "We can be that great team, we showed that in the first, third and fourth sets. The difference is 2-3 points on our side being just a little bit better."
Midwestern State was able to oust Texas A&M-Commerce in the first set with a 0.132 hitting percent versus the opposition's 0.047. The Mustangs collected 11 kills on 38 attacks with
Lissette Lefforge notching three put downs. The senior tallied 11 total kills, along with a block assist for 11. 5 points.
Taylor Anderson added two block assists in the rally and put up five kills.
For the Lions, Sydney Andersen was the top blocker with seven while Essence Allen turned in 13 kills.
MSU recorded three more kills than TAMUC in the second set (13 versus 10), but 13 errors got the best of the Mustangs. In the set,
Regan Willms collected five of her 17 total assists and tacked on seven digs.
Alyssa Estrada-Hamby grabbed two of her six kills in the second period and earned a 0.294 hitting percent on the night.
Celeste Vela led the match with 37 assists and Lyric Herbert pulled in 24 digs.
"Our middles had nice matches tonight, we just have to continue to keep them involved and don't let off what is working," said Armstrong.
As one of the middles, Serna turned in six kills in the third set to help MSU accumulate 13 crushes. The freshman notched 15 points with her 14 kills and two block assists while
Amy DeWalt led both teams with 25 passes, one away from her season-high notched at Texas Woman's (10/02). The defensive specialist also rounded up five helpers for Midwestern State.
Maiya Dickie topped both teams with a 0.571 hitting percent and 15 total points.
In what turned into the final set for the Mustangs, Bourne put down four kills and ended with nine. The sophomore was the leader with 42 attack attempts and adds 13 digs from the back row.
Autumn Roach gained her ninth 20+ assists match, totaling 25 against Texas A&M-Commerce. She pushes in three kills and 13 digs to the night's numbers.
"We will regroup tomorrow and give our best effort as always," ended Armstrong.
Midwestern State makes a quick turnaround to face off against No. UT Tyler on Saturday, Oct. 9. The breast cancer awareness match kicks off at noon in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
