WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State (7-3-3, 4-1-3 LSC) look to continue their conference win streak with a home slate versus West Texas A&M (9-4, 5-3 LSC). The Lone Star Conference face-off will kick-off at Stang Park on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.
 

FIVE STORY LINES

1 |  Randi Heaton is back on top for Midwestern State after collecting her fifth goal and third game-winner against Texas A&M-Commerce (10/20). The midfielder totals a Lone Star Conference 17th best 11 points with an added assist. Heaton's other two clinchers came in the team's overtime victories over East Central (9/18) and St. Mary's (10/02) to post second in the Lone Star Conference. Against the Tigers, she notched her goal in the last 18 seconds to play while claiming the game-winner at StMU in the first four minutes of OT. The senior recorded her first goal in Midwestern State's 3-1 win over Regis (9/12) and the last one against Texas A&M International (10/09). Her first assist of the season was registered against No. 10 Dallas Baptist (10/16). Heaton recorded 11 shots and pushed ten on frame for a 0.909 shot on goal percent on the year. In addition, she notched 12 starts in 13 matches to earn 946 minutes on the pitch. In her career, the Westminster, Colo., native accumulated seven goals, two assists and 16 points on 32 shots and 4,250 minutes.

Hannah Kelley-Lusk leads West Texas A&M and the Lone Star Conference with 18 goals, 1.64 goals per game, 62 shots, 5.64 shots per game, 39 shots on goal and 3.55 shots on goal per game. The senior adds 7 assists and two game-winners in 969 minutes.

2 |  Cassidy Savoy sits close behind Heaton with ten points, divided out to four goals and two assists. The sophomore conducted a brace plus a helper in the team's 5-1 defeat over UT Permian Basin (10/13) and added a two-goal match against Northwestern Oklahoma State (9/02). Her second goal at NWOKS notched her only game-winner of the season. Savoy hit 24 shots ten landing on frame for a 0.417 shot on goal percent.  The forward caught a season-high five attempts versus Eastern New Mexico (9/29) and Oklahoma Christian (10/06) while gaining three shots on goal at UT Permian Basin (10/13). Savoy notched eight starts with 719 minutes in 12 games played. The Fort Worth, Texas, native completed 32 shots with 14 landing on target in her 22 match career.

Asha James is second for the Lady Buffs with eight goals and two assists for 18 points on the season. The sophomore tallied 56 shots with 28 landing on frame. She has one game winner in 13 starts.

3 |  Lexi Beck holds the most shots (37) for Midwestern State. Th freshman earns ninth in the Lone Star Conference with the feat and her average of 2.85 per match sits tenth. Beck's 20 shots on frame gains fifth in the LSC, as does her 1.58 average. The midfielder records two goals and two helpers for six points on the season. She notched the game winning goal against Northwestern Oklahoma State (9/02) for her first collegiate points. Versus Eastern New Mexico (9/29), Beck went for a goal and added an assist. Her second helper of the year was on Kelly Cannistra's tally against Texas A&M International (10/09).

4 |  13 matches into the 18 game regular season, MSU's 22 goals overtook their totals from the 2020 and 2019 seasons. In 2020, the team put up 11 goals in ten games and in 2019, the Mustangs accounted 21 goals in 18 matches. In their first 13 matches, the Mustangs have played to seven wins, three drops and three draws for a .654 winning percent. Midwestern State out shines their opponents 215 to 176 on shots, kicking 34 at East Central (9/18). They also have 117 to 82 for shots on goal with the season-high 21 coming at East Central. As a whole, the squad earned 13 assists versus the opposition's six helpers. As for corner kicks, MSU registers 74 corner kicks and holds the other teams to 48.

5 |  Both Midwestern State and West Texas A&M hold 15 points in the Lone Star Conference standings with MSU holding the fifth spot with two less wins than WT who sits in sixth. The Lady Buffs were recently recognized in the United Soccer Coaches poll as a team receiving votes in the top 25 rankings. The Mustangs will put up a good fight to keep their top five standing in the LSC against the opposition. The full Lone Star Conference standings are below.

HEAD COACH RYAN SPENCE begins his fourth season as head coach at his alma mater. In the 2020 season, he led the Mustangs to the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. As a player, Spence helped the Mustangs dominate in his four years on the field. He earned All-American from 2008-11 and helped the team reach the Final Four in 2010. His center back prowess assisted in gaining 35 shutouts in his tenure. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, he gained his masters from MSU in 2014-15. From there, Spence moved on as assistant coach at Texas A&M International in 2016 and head coach at Eastern New Mexico in 2017 before coming back to Midwestern State in 2018.
 
SERIES WITH THE LADY BUFFS
With the series taking off in 1996, Midwestern State and West Texas A&M have battled to a 25-20-3 record with the Lady Buffs holding the advantage. MSU has dropped the last six matches against WT, with the last win taking place in 2016 in a non-conference match. In Lone Star Conference play, West Texas A&M is ahead 19-15-2 while Midwestern State holds an impressive 13-6 record at home. The last meeting between the two teams was in the 2020 season. On March 6, 2021, Valentina Carvajal scored the only goal for the Mustangs in the Lady Buff's 4-1 defeat in Canyon, Texas.
