COMMERCE, Texas -- Midwestern State benefitted from two incredible trends Wednesday at Lion Soccer Field.
Senior
Randi Heaton continued her mastery of sniffing out goals in the box and that, in turn, pulled the Mustangs to fifth win in seven in road games in a 1-0 win over Texas A&M-Commerce.
"That was the best all-around game that we've had since I've been here," MSU coach
Ryan Spence said. "We defended the set pieces very well. That was something we needed before we play WT."
The great defense allowed Heaton's team-best third game winning goal to stand and it all started with an attack down the right channel in the 33rd.
Lexi Beck's pass led Emilia Beck down the wing before she dropped the ball to a charging
Kelly Cannistra, who was making a run to the near post. The play didn't produce a shot, but did result in a corner kick opportunity.
Junior
Alyssa Salinas lofted the ball to the far post that was won cleanly by freshman
Isabella Cruz, who head the ball to the near post. Heaton redirected the ball into the net from the near post for her fifth goal of the season.
"That was definitely a
Randi Heaton goal," That's why we call her 'Right Spot' Randi."
Defensively, the Mustangs handled Texas A&M-Commerce's long ball style by limiting the Lions to nine shots forcing junior
Lauren Freeman to make just two saves in her first start of the season.
"We fought hard on set piece," Spence said. "You can't beat them if can't defend those."
Midwestern State improved to 7-3-3 on the season and 4-1-3 in Lone Star Conference play. The Mustangs moved to 5-1-1 on the road.
MSU battles West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at Stang Park. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
Texas A&M-Commerce fell to 5-6-2 and 3-4-1.
