CANYON, Texas – It was a different day at a different venue Monday afternoon at First United Bank Center.
West Texas A&M senior Lexy Hightower's near perfect, 24-point performance paced the 19th-ranked Lady Buffs to a 78-60 win over Midwestern State.
It was a reversal of fortune for the Mustangs, who defeated the Lady Buffs 87-80 in overtime Saturday afternoon on the home floor at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
"We have to rely consistently to what we do. We can't go off script," MSU coach
Christopher Reay said. "This is exactly what we did at Cameron. We have to stay with what we do well."
Hightower helped WT take control of the game in the opening minutes of the second period scoring eight points during a 10-3 run to push the advantage to 10 points.
West Texas A&M expanded the lead to 20 following a string of mini-runs to start the third period before Jillian Sowell buried a 3-pointer from the wing to push the edge to 52-32.
Midwestern State used a 9-1 run culminating in a
Morgan Lenahan jumper in the paint to narrow the WT lead to 63-50 with 6:10 to play. That is as close as the Mustangs would get.
Lenahan matched junior forward
Haevyn Risley with a team-high 12 points, while junior
Shawnisay Millar pitched in 11 points.
Sophomore
Eternity Jackson buried a pair of 3-pointers to finish with eight points.
Hightower connected on 10-of-12 shots with a triple and was a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe to finish with an efficient 24 points. Senior forward Abby Spurgin added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Midwestern State (2-2, 2-2) battles Western New Mexico in the first of two matchups between the Mustangs Sunday afternoon at Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
West Texas A&M improved to 3-1.
