DALLAS – Two-time United States Basketball Writers' Association National Player of the Week Chandler Jacobs struck again to foil Midwestern State's upset efforts Friday night.
The senior guard from Missouri City connected on a closely-guarded, double-clutch 3-pointer from the left wing to lift 15th-ranked Dallas Baptist to an 81-80 win over the Mustangs at Burg Center.
But most of the night, the Mustangs kept the Lone Star Conference scoring under wraps holding him to a season-low 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
MSU's defensive efforts helped the Mustangs stay in front of the Patriots for nearly 29 minutes. The Mustangs surged to a game-high nine-point edge after junior
Derrick Ogechi buried three consecutive 3-pointers to post MSU to a 61-52 lead with 15:12 to play.
The Mustangs maintained the advantage until DBU posted an 8-2 run over the final 2:25 claiming their first lead of the second on Jacobs' 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining.
Junior forward
Jermane Carter scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting to match Ogechi with team-high honors for Midwestern State, which dropped to 7-3.
Sophomore guard
Terrell Wilson chipped 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting with two 3-pointers for the Mustangs, while
Jalin Brown finished with 10.
Freshman Ricky Lujan connected on six triples to lead all scorers with 23 points as DBU improved to 8-1 on the season.
Midwestern State and Dallas Baptist battle in a rematch of the Lone Star Conference crossover series Saturday afternoon at Burg Center. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
