WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Late game heroics from senior
Lauren Lindgren propelled Midwestern State to a 7-5 win over No. 2 UT Tyler on Sunday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader at Mustangs Park.
It was the first win over a top five opponent since an 11-4 victory over No. 4 Southeastern Oklahoma on February 8, 2015.
With the Mustangs trailing 5-4 in the sixth, Lindgren hammered a three-run home run over the wall in left on the first pitch she saw from Payton Foster (7-2). Foster suffered the loss just hours after earning a complete game win in game one.
"I knew she was a drop ball pitcher and I had to wait on it,"
Lauren Lindgren said. "I rolled over that pitch in a couple of bats in the first game so I went up there and swung with all my might."
The Patriots put runners at first and second with one out in the seventh before
Mattye Tyler retired Haleigh Swinney and pinch-hitter Shae Harris to end the threat and the game.
"When I went out there in the seventh, I just told her it's your game, now go get it," MSU Texas head coach
Mark Ryal said.
Tyler (1-7) notched her first with of the season with the complete game effort. The right-hander allowed five runs on six hits.
The two teams traded runs in the first before the Patriots plated three in top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Tristin Anders delivered a run scoring double and Mak Dominguez followed with a two-run double to left center. Dominguez drove in seven runs in the doubleheader.
Lindgren's RBI double in the third, her team leading 10th two-bagger of the season, closed the deficit to two before
Bailey Brenek homered to tie the game at 4-4. It marked the third straight game the freshman has gone deep.
The game stayed 4-4 until Kylie Brown's fifth inning home run pushed UT Tyler back in front. Lindgren's blast in the sixth, the third time the Mustangs erased a deficit in the game, capped off the scoring.
