SEARCY, Ark. - Northeastern State's (Okla.) Alyssia Crick delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap off a five-run frame and lift the RiverHawks past Midwestern State, 7-6, on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Harding Invitational at the HU Softball Complex.
Trailing 6-2 entering the last of the seventh, the RiverHawks sent eight batters to the plate.
With
Kathryn Wells pitching in relief, NSU loaded the bases with one out. Hannah Ailey and Megan Green both worked walks to cut the deficit to 6-4. Two batters later and down to their final out, Addie Elbon tied the game with a two-run double off the centerfield fence. Wells was lifted for
Mattye Tyler but the right-hander's first pitch was laced into left field by Crick to complete the comeback.
Wells (0-1) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Midwestern State's
Caycee Griffin opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the second, her first of the season. Northeastern State quickly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1 lead.
The game remained 2-1 until the sixth when MSU Texas plated three runs.
Jacey Henry knocked in a run with a booming double to right center field before
Mattye Tyler gave the Mustangs a 4-2 lead with a two-run single to left.
Midwestern State added two runs in the top of the seventh, which at the time, appeared to be key insurance runs.
Henry started for the Mustangs and took a no decision. The right-hander allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit.
Midwestern State takes the field again at 2:30 p.m. against Harding.
