WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Jacey Henry tossed a five inning shutout and Midwestern State scored early and often in an 8-0 five inning run rule victory over the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs on Saturday night at Mustangs Park as part of the MSU Texas Invitational.
Henry (1-3) earned her first win of the season after navigating a Bulldogs lineup that had scored 19 runs in their previous three games. The right-hander featured a steady diet of drop balls, keeping the visitors off balance for much of the night.
"Our team had great energy and just the support of them really helped me," the right-hander said.
MSU Texas raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first.
Bailey Wamsley singled to open the frame and after
Ashley Turner popped to second, the next four Mustangs reached base safely.
Lauren Lindgren walked ahead of
Bailey Brenek's run scoring single. Henry was hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Kelsey Eropkin reached on an error to make it 2-0.
Marley Eller followed with a run scoring groundout.
The Mustangs added a run in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
Henry then worked out of the trouble in the top of the fourth, collecting a strikeout and snaring a lineout with the bases loaded to keep the Bulldogs off the board.
Lauren Lindgren's RBI double in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead to 5-0. The outfielder has driven in runs in three straight games and four of five.
A three-run bottom of the fifth capped off the Mustangs' first win of the season. With runners at second and third and two out, Wamsley smacked a two-run single up the middle before Turner ended the game with a run scoring single to right.
"I think that's the first time we've scored in the first inning the whole year," MSU Texas head coach
Mark Ryal said. "You score three runs in the first inning, it's hard to fight back."
The Maroon and Gold close out the MSU Texas Invitational on Saturday afternoon against Regis (Colo.). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
