Hamilton, Mustangs hold off Cameron to improve to 2-0

LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron scratched and clawed back into the game Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym.

The Aggies whittled a 17-point deficit all the way down to four points with 3:47 to play, but Midwestern State junior forward Luke Hamilton buried consecutive triples to help stave off CU, 75-70.

"I wanted to do what I could to get my team to win. We needed to be together and have positive energy," Hamilton said. "Defense has been our primary focus and the offense will come."

The transfer from Mercer buried four 3-pointers to lead the Mustangs with 14 points as MSU improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2016.

The win came on the heels of MSU's 98-75 blowout of the Aggies on Friday night, but coach Justin Leslie expected something different on Saturday.

"I told the guys at shoot around three small things to better at than we were last night. I knew they were going to come out with a different game plan," Leslie said. "It will be the teams that expect it to be the same that will be caught up. I have friends (in professional basketball) who have played these back-to-backs. We needed to see something new and that will help us with our growth."

But the Aggies wouldn't go away as Connor Slater and Kino Thompson rattled in contested triples to pull Cameron back to within two points with 11 seconds go to.

"They were able to stick some tough 3s with a hand in their face at the end," Leslie said. "You have to give them credit to make this a tight game at the end."

Midwestern State freshmen guards Pierre Sanders and Rommell Williams connected on free throws to ice the game for the Mustangs.

Junior guard Derrick Ogechi added 13 points and six rebounds, while Williams added 12.

Kendall Scott notched a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Aggies.

Midwestern State plays host to Texas A&M International for a pair of games Friday and Saturday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
