ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian's opening salvo included five triples to stake the Wildcats to a massive 21-point lead through the opening 10 minutes Sunday afternoon at Teague Event Center.
The Wildcats continued to rain 3s and pull away from Midwestern State throughout the remainder of the game to roll to a 91-48 exhibition win.
MSU, which finished the week with a pair of preseason losses against NCAA Division I opposition out of the Southland Conference, opens the regular season with a pair of games against Cameron on Dec. 11 and 12. Both games are slated for Aggie Gym in Lawton.
Junior forward
Shawnisay Millar connected on a pair of 3-pointers to go 4-of-10 from the field to book a team-high 11 points, while sophomore
Mandy Withey worked for seven points and eight rebounds.
It wasn't enough to overcome Abilene Christian's efficient effort on the offensive end of the floor.
The Wildcats shot an even 50 percent from the floor and knocked down 13 3-pointers paced by senior guard Anna McLeod, who poured in 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four treys.
Junior guard Madi Miller also demonstrated great touch going 6-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to finish with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
ACU senior forward Alyssa Adams proved to be a defensive menace for the Wildcats going for nine points, 10 rebounds, six blocked shots and three steals.
Midwestern State struggled to a 32.7-percent shooting night including a 4-of-17 effort from 3-point range. The Mustangs managed to produce nine free-throw attempts after putting up 30 against Sam Houston State Wednesday night in Huntsville.
Abilene Christian improved to 2-0 on the season.
NOTABLES
* Midwestern State fell to 2-11 all time against NCAA Division II opponents in combined regular season and exhibition play. The Mustangs have dropped nine straight since defeating UT Arlington – 67-56 – on Nov. 8, 2011 in Arlington.
* The game between Midwestern State and Abilene Christian became possible due to COVID-19 tracing wiped away weekend opponents for each team. MSU was originally slated to play UT Arlington Sunday in Arlington, while ACU was scheduled to play crosstown McMurry Saturday afternoon at Teague Center.
* Saturday marked the second exhibition meeting between the programs since Abilene Christian departed the Lone Star Conference for NCAA Division I following the 2012-13 season.
* Midwestern State improved its ball security pairing its turnovers down from 30 against Sam Houston State on Wednesday to 18 versus Abilene Christian.
