Javelinas take advantage of turnovers in 77-66 over MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Texas A&M-Kingsville transitioned to quickly turn turnovers into points on the way to a 77-66 win over Midwestern State Thursday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

"They are a fantastic defensive team. They have been doing that to a lot of folks," MSU coach Justin Leslie said. "We've been working hard this week on ways we can manufacture some baskets and get some points. We made some costly mistakes oat times we should have scored and it led to them scoring."

The Javelinas improved to 15-5 overall and 11-3 in Lone Star Conference play spinning 20 Midwestern State turnovers into 27, while the Mustangs managed just five points off of TAMUK's eight miscues.

"Our defense wasn't nearly disruptive enough, but give them credit," Leslie said. "They have very tough, physical guards that are consistently putting pressure on the defense."

Senior guard Chauncey Thomas needed just nine shots to lead the Hoggies with 19 points connecting on five of his nine field attempts while going a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.

Juniors Tre Flowers and Jamell Bradley modeled efficiency for Texas A&M-Kingsville both going 6-of-9 from the floor to notch 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Midwestern State senior guard D'monta Harris poured in a game-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting with three 3-pointers.

"He's a talented scorer," Leslie said. "We've been working with him on being shot ready when the ball hits his hands. He was doing a good job tonight of catching and shooting."

Sophomore captain Jalin Brown scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds while posting overall plus-4 in his 31 minutes on the floor.

Senior guard Elijah Lee battled his way through a 1-of-7 shooting night to score four points. He also grabbed eight rebounds, dished out five assists and made two steals to lead the Mustangs going plus-7 in his 30 minutes of court time.

Midwestern State takes on Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
