WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State put on a show for the NCAA Division II Showcase national audience Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs broke out to drill a season 15 3-pointers and shared the ball to the tune of 25 assists on 35 made baskets to rout Texas A&M International, 99-58.
"It is so much of the camaraderie and the work that we've put in to try to build some of those habits that lead to these moments," MSU Texas coach
Justin Leslie said. "We shared the ball so well. It wasn't just the man making the passes, it was the guy receiving them creating windows whether it was for a dump off underneath for a layup or for a 3 stepping in. Stuff we've been working on all year that we've just been so close to having it connect and tonight it did."
The scoring output was the most for a Midwestern State squad since the Mustangs scored 123 points in an overtime win at Western Colorado on Nov. 18, 2017 and the 41-point margin of victory was the largest since MSU drilled Eastern New Mexico -- 112-68 -- in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament quarterfinals on March 2, 2016.
The Mustangs did it with efficiency and true teamwork connecting on 55.6 percent from the floor including a 15-of-32 clip from the arc (46.9 percent). The 15 made triples were the most since MSU hit the same number in a 103-88 victory over Adams State (Colo.) on Nov. 14, 2016.
Senior point guard
Elijah Lee set the tone by completing his first collegiate double-double with 13 points while dishing out a career-best 10 assists. He drilled four of his six shots from the field including three 3-pointers.
"I wasn't paying much attention to my field goal percentage or my assist-to-turnover ratio," Lee said. "I was just playing free and my teammates did the rest. I have struggled with the 3 over the past two years, but tonight I was very intentional about making shots count."
Fellow senior
D'monta Harris delivered his third-straight and fifth 20-point effort of the campaign finishing with a game-high 26 points as the Pontiac, Mich. native knocked down 10 of his 18 shots from the field including six triples.
Freshman
Evan McCarthy was nearly perfect in scoring 12 points off of the bench. The Mansfield native was a flawless 3-for-3 from the arc and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in 20 minutes of action.
Thirteen different Mustangs found the score line as Midwestern State improved to 4-16 overall and 4-10 in league play.
Senior forward Caleb Highley tallied 20 points to lead Texas A&M International which fell to 3-18 and 1-14.
Midwestern State takes on Tarleton State Thursday night in Stephenville. Tipoff at Wisdom Gym is set for 7:30 p.m.
