WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State battle back from 10 points down in the second half to pull even with Cameron Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
But the Mustangs were unable to surge ahead, falling to the Aggies 76-73.
The count of losses by five-or-fewer points ticks to eight for Midwestern this season as it fell to 2-13 on the season and 2-7 in Lone Star Conference play.
MSU and Cameron close out Red River Rivalry Week Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym in Lawton. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
"If you would have told me coming into the game that we would have 16 more shots than them, I would be very confident to where we would be," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "We wanted more possessions by not turning the ball over, forcing turnovers and getting offensive rebounds. We did exactly that."
The Mustangs committed a season-low six turnovers and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds, but went ice cold from the field shooting 38.2 percent from the floor, while going 7-of-35 from the arc.
"We had fantastic looks tonight. Our guys have to stay confident in what we are doing. That is what our offense is designed to do," Leslie said. "We had an extraordinary number of paint touches tonight, but we were also missing layups."
Still, the Mustangs used a 10-2 run powered by 3-pointers by
Darius Thompson and
Daniel Mosley to knot the game at 59-59 on a pair of Thompson free throws with 6:16 to play.
But Cameron answered with an 11-2 run of their own to reclaim a nine-point edge at 70-61 with 2:47 to go.
Senior guard
D'monta Harris followed a four-point play with 15-jumper from the wing to pull MSU back to within a single possession at 70-67 with 1:47 remaining.
Cameron struggled at the charity stripe down the stretch by going 4-for-8 to leave the door open for the Mustangs.
After Thompson canned his third triple of the game, senior forward
Ola Ayodele converted a layup with a foul with the opportunity to tie the game with just four seconds to play. He misfired on free throw allowing Cameron to escape with the victory.
Thompson paced the Mustangs with 19 points, while
Trae Jones joined Ayodele with nine points each.
Brock Schreiner poured in a game-high 20 points to pace the Aggies, who improved to 4-11 overall and moved to 3-6 in Lone Star Conference play.
