LAWTON, Oklahoma – Sarah Eakin blasted 13 kills to the tune of a .400 hitting percentage, but Midwestern State was swept by rival Cameron 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 25-27) in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams on Friday night at Aggie gym.
Eakin, fresh off a .440 kill rate against Dallas Baptist last Saturday, committed just three errors in 25 total attacks against the Aggies.
Kaitlyn Masseth logged double-digit assists for the third straight match. The freshman finished with 17 helpers.
Cameron took control of a back and forth first set with six straight points to erase a 9-7 deficit. Trailing 13-9, MSU scored the next two points on kills from
Taylor Anderson and
Raven Presley, but it was the closest the Mustangs would come in the opening set loss.
The Aggies raced out to a 6-0 lead in the second set, capitalizing on three MSU attack errors.
Lauren Honeycutt's kill helped stop the bleeding, spurring the Mustangs to four of the next five points. Cameron answered with a 4-1 run of their own before Head Coach
Valerie Armstrong called a timeout. Following the break in play, the Mustangs clawed to within four points on multiple occasions, but were unable to complete the comeback.
In a seesaw third and final set, the Mustangs fought off match point a couple of times before dropping a 27-25 decision.
