Bang bang call goes the other way, Mustangs fall by one

FRISCO, Texas -- After two and a half games, Midwestern State solved the Tarleton State TexAnns.

The Mustangs used a zone defense and attacked Tarleton's pressure, switching man defense by taking the TexAnns head on.

The tactics allowed MSU Texas to overcome a 10-point deficit and take a brief lead before falling 62-61 in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament quarterfinals Friday at Comerica Center.

"We didn't have a very good first half," MSU Texas coach Noel Johnson said. "We turned the ball over too many times and  were rushed. We seemed a little panicked. We talked about it at halftime and this team came out and showed a lot of heart. I am very proud of them."

Behind senior guard Chelcie Kizart (19 points) and sophomore forward Hannah Reynolds (14 points, six rebounds), the Mustangs shot 50 percent as a team in the second half taking their first lead at the close of the third period.

The Mustangs never led by more than two in the final stanza with the game coming down to the final seconds with ball in Kizart's hands trailing Tarleton State by one.

The St. Paul, Minn. native beat her defender to the left baseline and made the apparent go-ahead before crashing into Tarleton State freshman Kandyn Faurie. Kizart was whistled for the charge with 4.8 seconds left.

"When I saw the play develop, I saw the help come over," Johnson said. "It was one of those plays that I thought could either way."

Kizart, who led the comeback with 14 second-half points, agreed.

"I probably should have looked where the defensive help was coming from," she said. "I can't really help what the refs call. It was a good call by the refs."

Tarleton State stemmed the tide midway through the fourth period when senior guard McKinley Bostad buried the TexAnns only two 3-pointers of the game.

The first resulted when Tarleton won a scrum for a loose ball allowing Bostad to uncover at the top of the key to give the TSU a 58-55 lead with 3:56 to play. Bostad buried the second triple from the left corner to answer a Kizart jumper to push the Tarleton lead to four with 2:51 to go.

MSU Texas sophomore guard KItyana Diaz added eight points and seven rebounds off of the bench, while Liz Cathcart and Mica Schneider also chipped in eight points each.

Tarleton State (22-7) moves on to face Angelo State in the semifinal round Saturday night at Comerica Center. Tipoff is set 8:30 p.m.
