Midwestern State takes down fourth-ranked West Florida

SAN ANTONIO -- It was a statement weekend for No. 17 Midwestern State.

The Mustangs claimed their first two victories over Top 10 foes polishing off the week with a 4-3 win over No. 4-ranked West Florida to improve to 8-1.

The victory came just 24 hours after Midwestern beat No. 9 Indianapolis showing the Mustangs quickly overcame its only loss of the season -- coming Thursday to 16th-ranked Hawaii Pacific.

Front man Angel Palacios continued to shine by taking down his third consecutive nationally ranked foe in No. 8 Serder Bojadjiev -- in straight sets -- 6-4, 7-5.

The native of Piedras Negras, Mexico also teamed with junior Denney Norrie to get the Mustangs off on the winning track with a 6-1 victory over Gerardo Irarrazabal and Pedro Cordeiro at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Dillon Pineda and Nolan McCaig clinched the doubles' edge for the Mustangs with a 6-3 win over Lucas Sanchez and Juan Cabrera at the No. 2 line.

A spirited singles battle ensued with the teams alternating singles wins building to a 3-all tie with MSU Texas victories coming from Palacios and sophomore Alberto Diaz, who claimed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 edge over No. 34 Juan Motta at the No. 5 position.

Finally, sophomore Alex Martinez-Roca clinched the Mustangs' win -- 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 -- over Robin Rafaitin at No. 4.

The Mustangs dropped three singles matches for just the second time this season against West Florida, but have also claimed the doubles point in seven of nine matches.
