Mustangs fall to Lubbock Christian, 73-72

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State just couldn't shake a stubborn Lubbock Christian squad Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

The Chaps rode the stellar play of senior forward Rashaan Proctor and junior guard Lloyd Daniels to shoot just under 60 percent in the second half to edge the Mustangs 73-72.

"You're not going to win many games giving up 46 points in a half. You have to give credit," MSU coach Justin Leslie said. "(Rashaan) Proctor had a great game. He just kept plugging away and kept them within striking distance when we had opportunities to pull away and create separation. We just couldn't get a stop on him."

Proctor scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the second half going 8-of-12 from the field by utilizing a litany of isolation moves to accentuate LCU's 50-28 advantage of points in the paint. It was Proctor who worked his way free to lay in what proved to be the game winner with 55 seconds to play.

But it was Daniels who scored 12 consecutive points for the Chaps during a 7-minute window down the stretch on his way to a 16-point scoring night.

"We just continued to close out and give him paint attacks," Leslie said. "He made some really high degree of difficulty shots. That was our opportunity for separation and we missed it."

It is the third one-point setback of the season for the Mustangs, who also suffered a 73-72 loss at Central Oklahoma and an 80-79 defeat at UT Permian Basin. Despite the tough defeats, the Mustangs continue to grow.

Midwestern committed just two turnovers in the second half and continued to hound the opposition on the 3-point arc as the Chaps managed to connect on just four of their 20 3-point attempts.

The Mustangs added another 50-percent-or-better shooting half and finished the game at 44.6 percent including 11-of-26 marksmanship from 3-point range.

"We got quality looks consistently throughout. They just made one more," Leslie said. "I was proud of the guys' execution down the stretch."

The Mustangs advanced the ball to half court in the closing seconds and used a timeout to setup a game winning opportunity. Darius Thompson's shot was online but fell just short.

"We got the ball in the hands of the right guy and they just missed," Leslie said.

Senior guard D'Monta Harris led the Mustangs with 18 points, while sophomore guard Trae Jones buried three triples to finish with 11 points.

Freshman guard Evan McCarthy connected on two 3-pointers to book 10 points. The Mansfield, Texas native has scored in double figures in each of MSU's four games at Ligon Coliseum this season.

The Mustangs (1-9, 1-3) take on UT Tyler on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Louise Herrington Patriot Center in Tyler. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Lubbock Christian claimed its third straight win to improve to 6-4 and 3-2.
