LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Two first half goals in quick succession doomed 10th seeded Midwestern State in a 3-0 loss to second seeded Cal State, Los Angeles in the Second Round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships on Saturday night at Jesse Owens Track.
The Golden Eagles broke through in the 13th minute. David Elizaga's initial shot was stopped by
Taylor Lampe, but Daniel Simonis smashed home the rebound to give the home team the lead. Just 49 seconds later, the Golden Eagles made it 2-0 on Simonis' second goal of the game.
"When you play a really good team like them and make mistakes, you pay the price," Head Coach
Michael Meachum said.
Cal State, Los Angeles increased their lead to 3-0 on a Robin Lindahl tally in the 55th minute.
"We started the second half well," said Meachum. "We were trying to get guys forward and create chances. But they countered on us and punished us for having so many guys getting forward."
Midwestern State's best chance of the night came in the 8th minute when the Golden Eagles were whistled for a hand ball in the box. But
Dylan Burke's shot was corraled by Alex Brems to keep the game scoreless.
"A penalty kick can change a team's mentality," Meachum said. "It is either the high of scoring a goal or the high of making the save."
The Mustangs close the 2019 campaign at 16-5 and winners of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
"I know we had some really good seniors this year," Meachum said. "When we were pushed late in the season with that three-game losing streak, I think the seniors did a really good job of showing the underclassmen how to keep pushing. That is what I am going to take away from this season."
