Midwestern State captures Lone Star Conference Tournament Title

Flores' heroics push MSU past St. Mary's, 1-0

FINAL SCORE
Midwestern State 1 (15-4-0)
St. Mary's 0 (14-3-2)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Carlos Flores' late game heroics lifted No. 25 and second seeded Midwestern State to a 1-0 win over top-seed and No. 11 St. Mary's in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Final on Sunday afternoon at Sigma Beta Chi Field.

The junior's fourth goal of the season, a strike from inside the box in the 77th minute, was all the offense the Mustangs would need on an unseasonably warm fall day in San Antonio.

"Carlos has always been a player for us," Head Coach Michael Meachum said. "He has started here since he was a freshman and knows how to perform in big games."

St. Mary's best chance of the match came just before Flores' game-winner when Nenad Markovic drilled a free kick from 25-yards out that stung the left post. The Rattlers finished with five shots.

Taylor Lampe was named the LSC Tournament MVP after yielding just one goal. He made five saves.

"Lampe is a big piece of the puzzle," Meachum said. "He has made some big saves for us."

With the win, the Mustangs earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships. MSU will learn their seed and opponent on Monday night at 5:30 p.m. Central Time during the NCAA Division II Selection Show.

"Hopefully our body of work will stand out to the selection committee," Meachum said. "We took a dip in the middle of the season but finished strong. We would love to play a game at Stang Park."
