SAN ANTONIO, Texas – For the third time this season, Midwestern State meets St. Mary's on the pitch. The No. 2 seeded Mustangs and No. 1 seeded Rattlers square off on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Final.
SERIES HISTORY
While Midwestern State owns a 30-2 record against St. Mary's, the Rattlers have won both head-to-head meetings this season. STMU upended the Mustangs 2-0 on September 21 before earning a 3-2 win in double overtime on October 26.
STRIKE THREE?
St. Mary's has won each of the first two meetings from the Mustangs this season, putting the Rattlers in position to become just the second team to defeat MSU three times in a single season since the program moved to Division II (1997). West Texas A&M accomplished the feat during the 2000 season.
SENSATIONAL SERGIO
Sergio Lara pushed his goal streak to three games with a pair of strikes against Texas A&M International in Friday night's quarterfinal. The Second Team All-Lone Star Conference performer now leads the Maroon and Gold with eight goals and 19 points.
POSTSEASON PRIMER
St. Mary's and Midwestern State each received byes in the opening round of the LSC Tournament by virtue of finishing 1-2 in the league. The Rattlers then defeated No. 4 St. Edward's in overtime, 3-2, while the Mustangs hammered No. 3 Texas A&M International, 4-1.
IN THE RANKINGS
Midwestern State remained No. 6 in the Super-Region 4 Rankings that were released on Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee. The top eight teams in the region qualify for the NCAA postseason. The first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship kicks off on November 21 or 22 with first round games.
A MINUTE WITH MEACHUM
Michael Meachum kicked off his second year as Head Coach at Midwestern State with a 2-0 win over Dixie State on September 5 at Stang Park. Meachum posted a 16-1-3 mark in his first season at the helm.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's advanced to the LSC Tournament Finals by defeating St. Edward's, 3-2, in overtime on Friday night. Marlon Flores netted the game-winner in the 95th minute to help the Rattlers to their 11th win in their last 12 games. Ollie Wright, who was recently named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, has scored eight goals and handed out 10 assists for a team-high 26 points. Third Team All-Lone Star Conference Forward Edu Toiny-Pendred leads the squad with 9 goals. Goalkeeper Jacob Sayle has compiled an 11-2-2 record and a 0.99 goals against average (GAA).
