KINGSVILLE, Texas – Junior
Bishop Coulter scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in Midwestern State's 65-53 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday at the Steinke Center.
MSU Texas drops to 6-12 on the season and 2-6 in Lone Star Conference play while the Javelinas improve to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in league action.
TAMUK's Darius Mickens led all players with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting.
Gilbert Thomas, Jr., and
Terrell Wilson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Elijah Lee grabbed seven rebounds and handed out three assists in the loss.
The Mustangs shot 42.9 percent from the floor, outshooting the Javelinas, but surrendered 18 offensive rebounds resulting in 17 second chance points.
MSU Texas opened the game on a 14-2 run, hitting eight of its first 13 shots before a 25-2 run for TAMUK gave the Javelinas the lead for good. The Mustangs went cold in the final 10 minutes of the first half, missing seven straight shots.
The Javelinas maintained the lead in the second half. Trailing, 59-45, MSU Texas cut the deficit to six on an 8-0 run, capped by a trey from Coulter, down 59-53 with 1:45 to go, but the Maroon and Gold were unable to score again for their second straight loss.
