Garcia’s heroics give @MsuWsoc 2-2 result with Fort Lewis

THE RUNDOWN
SAN ANGELO, Texas – Freshman Senna Garcia converted a penalty kick in the final 10 seconds of regulation to force overtime in a 2-2 draw with Fort Lewis.

Midwestern State improves to 1-0-1 after the tie against its former coach, Damian Clarke.

"Senna was impressive this morning," coach Ryan Spence said. "The defenders defended well. We had a lapse on one of their free kicks which hurt us. The effort was there for the most part, we just had some trouble finishing."

Junior Avery Lewis broke the scoring seal early in the match to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 advantage. In the 14th-minute, freshman Emma Baley lofted a corner kick into the box where Lewis' header found its mark. Baley picked up her second assist in as many games to begin her career in the Maroon and Gold.

The MSU Texas lead was short lived, however, as the Skyhawks responded two minutes later. Renee Terrell scored the equalizer off a deflection in the 16th-minute to tie the contest.

Fort Lewis took the lead in the 77th-minute. Chloe Chapman found Renee Terrell for the go-ahead goal with just over 12 minutes to play.

In the final minute, the Mustangs countered off Terrell's shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. With 10 seconds to go, the Skyhawks were called for a handball in the box.

In just her second career game, Garcia drilled the penalty kick to force overtime.

In the extra period, keeper Samantha Upton rejected Allison Bischof's would-be golden goal with four minutes to go.

Upton made four saves in 100 minutes of action while MSU Texas was able to attempt six corner kicks without yielding any to the Skyhawks.
