Efficient @MWSU_MBB whips Colorado State-Pueblo to open Al Kaly Shrine Classic

PUEBLO, Colo. -- Midwestern State put the pressure on Colorado State-Pueblo resulting in a 92-66 rout of the Thunderwolves Friday night in the Al Kaly Shrine Classic at Massari Arena.

"It all started with our defensive pressure," MSU Texas coach Nelson Haggerty said. "When you do a good job of defending, it allows us to be aggressive offensively and keep them on their heels. We chased the ball well, too."

The Mustangs (2-1) limited Colorado State-Pueblo to 37 percent shooting turning 15 Thunderwolve turnovers into 19 points while producing insurmountable 21-5 edge in second chance points in their first game away from D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Midwestern also flexed its inside muscle led by junior Bishop Coulter, who converted 10 of his 14 shots from the field to finish with 21 points and seven rebounds. Fellow junior Dorian Chatman was 4-of-5 from the floor to log eight points with three bounds in 14 minutes off of the bench.

"Bishop was great from start to finish and Dorian was great off of the bench. We got a lot out of that 5 position," Haggerty said. "We just got contributions from everyone tonight."

Redshirt-freshman Trae Jones buried three triples to up his career-high to 14 points in a starting role, while junior D'monta Harris was near perfect off of the bench going 9-for-10 to close with a 19 points and eight rebounds.

Senior JuJuan Starks gave more help off of the pine going for 12 points and seven rebounds as the MSU reserves totaled 41 points.

Junior Josh Wallace delivered all-around numbers stepping into the point guard role with seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

"Holding this team to 37 percent from the field and under 70 points was really encouraging for this basketball team," Haggerty said. "I am really proud of our guys with the way responded tonight."

Midwestern State closes the Al Kaly Shrine Classic Saturday against Adams State (Colo.). Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. (Central).
