AUSTIN, Texas – Addison Semer recorded a career best in kills in the first match of the day while
Kristan Aduddell and
Rockelle Gholson each posted double-doubles in Friday's finale to lead Midwestern State to a pair of victories over Black Hills State (S.D.) and St. Edward's at the Hilltopper Classic.
The Mustangs (4-2) began the day with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Black Hills State (S.D.) (2-4) after erasing a 2-0 deficit in the match.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team claiming more than a two-point advantage. Midwestern overcame a two-point deficit late before the Yellow Jackets benefited from an Ellise Lech kill and an MSU hitting error to take a 25-23 win in the set. The Yellow Jackets coasted in the second set, hitting .435 with 12 kills while limiting the Mustangs to a -.091 attacking clip for a 25-12 victory.
Semer,
Erin Richburg and
Raven Presley each posted four kills in the third set to help the Mustangs avoid a sweep in earning a 25-20 victory after closing out the game on a 6-1 run. In set number four, Semer and
Meghan Bettis combined for nine of MSU's 18 kills with the Mustangs finishing with a .385 hitting clip to claim a 25-22 win.
MSU mounted a 10-0 spurt to record a 15-7 fifth set victory as Gholson came on strong with three kills and a block during the run.
In the second match of the day, Midwestern State rallied from a first set loss to coast to a 3-1 victory over host St. Edward's (4-2).
The Hilltoppers overcame a 14-10 hole in the opening set before squeaking by the Mustangs with a 28-26 first set win.
Gholson and
Sarah Eakin led the charge for the Maroon and Gold in the second frame, combining for nine of MSU's 16 kills to even up the match with a 25-20 win after hitting .300.
Midwestern jumped out to a 10-3 advantage in the third set but the Hilltoppers eventually knotted up the game at 11 apiece after six MSU attacking errors. However, the Mustangs broke a 15-15 tie with a 10-2 run down the stretch with Semer contributing four kills in the run to take a 25-17 win and 2-1 lead in the match.
Gholson added five kills while
Addy Cook totaled four in the fourth set to lead MSU to a 25-15 victory to close out the match.
