Top-seeded Mustangs begin LSC Championship run Friday

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After claiming its third Lone Star Conference regular season title last weekend, top-seeded Midwestern State looks to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA  Tournament at the two-day LSC Championship Friday and Saturday at the Arlington Tennis Center.

The 15th-ranked Mustangs await the winner between No. 4 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville and No. 5 UT Permian Basin for a semifinal matchup Friday at 6 p.m. in Arlington. On the other half of the bracket, No. 2 Cameron awaits the winner of No. 3 Tarleton State and No. 6 Western New Mexico for its semifinal. The LSC title match is slated for a 2 p.m. start Saturday.

MSU IN THE LSC CHAMPIONSHIP
- Midwestern State earned back-to-back LSC titles in 2014 and 2015 after finishing the regular season undefeated in conference play
- The Mustangs come into this week's tournament having made four-straight trips to the championship match
 
LAZZAROTTO TABBED LSC ACADEMIC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
- Sophomore Greta Lazzarotto earned LSC Academic Player of the Year honors Thursday, becoming the third Mustang in program history to collect the accolade
- Lazzarotto joined two-time honoree Michelle Beukes (2005-06) and Kayla Casey (2015) on the list of Mustangs to receive the honor
- Lazzarotto has posted another impressive season for the Mustangs this season with 39 combined dual wins for the 11th most in a single season while carrying a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom as a Management major
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State wrapped up its regular season with a 19-4 record and 5-0 mark in the LSC, tying for the sixth-most wins in program history while achieving its fourth-highest ranking at No. 15 last month
- The Mustangs matched their most single-season home wins in school history with a 10-0 mark at the MSU Tennis Center
- MSU currently ranks second in the NCAA South Central Region rankings behind No. 12 St. Mary's (Texas) while appearing in front of No. 43 Dallas Baptist (Texas), No. 24 Cameron, Tarleton State and Metro State (Colo.)
- The top four teams from the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Tournament with the top two teams serving as hosts for opening round action May 1-2 at their campus site
- Ranked fifth in the South Central Region, Daria Panferova carries a 14-8 record with six wins over regionally-ranked opponents playing at the top singles position for the Mustangs
- Bianca Duff also cracks the top 10 in the regional rankings at No. 7 with a 15-6 record on court three with three wins over players ranked in the top 20 in the region
- Eirini Kontaki comes in at No. 12 in the region with a 15-7 mark playing at line two with three victories over regionally-ranked foes
- At No. 4 singles, Maddy Coffman leads the Mustangs with a 19-4 record, winning 15 of her last 16 matches
- Greta Lazzarotto has claimed 13 of her last 14 matches for an 18-4 mark playing at No. 5
- Ashley Ramirez rounds out the singles lineup for MSU with a 15-5 record on court six, winning 12 of her last 13
- The Mustangs boast two doubles teams that sit atop the program record books in single-season winning percentage with a .913 clip
- At No. 1, Coffman and Duff carry a 21-2 record for fourth in the South Central Region
- Lazzarotto and Ramirez have won 14-straight matches to also total a 21-2 mark playing on court three
- On court two, Panferova and Kontaki are 8-2 on the season to rank 10th in the regional rankings
