Mustangs begin homestand with three matches this weekend

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State begins a seven-match homestand Friday as the 15th-ranked Mustangs play host to three teams this weekend at the MSU Tennis Center.

The Mustangs open up Friday with a 3:30 p.m. in-region matchup against No. 42 St. Edward's (Texas). Midwestern State follows with its first-ever meeting against No. 30 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) Saturday at 10 a.m. before a Lone Star Conference meeting against Texas A&M-Kingsville Sunday at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
- Midwestern State returns to Wichita Falls following a Saturday road trip to Shawnee, Okla., where the Mustangs defeated No. 18 Oklahoma Baptist, 7-2, on OBU's home court while taking down Newman (Kan.), 8-1, in a neutral site contest.
 
MUSTANGS CLIMB TO 15TH IN NATIONAL POLL
- The Mustangs achieved their fourth-highest national ranking in program history last week, jumping six spots to No. 15 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Division II national poll
- The top-15 ranking is the fourth for the program in the last three seasons, earning a program-best ranking of 13th at the conclusion of the 2015 season that included a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight and back-to-back rankings of No. 14 during the 2015 season
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State has compiled a 10-3 record halfway through the regular season for its best start since the 2014 campaign when the Mustangs started 23-3 en route to a NCAA Sweet 16 appearances
- The Mustangs are ranked second in the South Central Region behind No. 12 St. Mary's (Texas) and sit in front of conference rival Cameron in the regional rankings
- MSU boasts three players in the top 10 in the regional singles rankings in Daria Panferova (5th), Bianca Duff (7th) and Eirini Kontaki (9th)
- Playing at No. 1 singles, Panferova sports a 7-6 record with three wins over regionally-ranked players this season
- Duff carries an 8-5 record with a 7-2 mark playing at No. 3 singles, twice being named LSC Player of the Week
- Kontaki has won nine of her last 10 matches for a 10-3 record, claiming nine wins in straight sets at lines two and three
- Maddy Coffman is riding a six-match win streak to match Kontaki with a team-best 10-3 record playing at No. 4 and 5 this year
- Greta Lazzarotto comes in on a four-match winning streak for a 9-3 mark playing primarily on court five
- In doubles, Coffman and Duff are off to the best start in program history with a 13-0 record playing mostly at No. 2 before claiming two wins on court one last weekend including an 8-6 victory over the 12th-ranked duo of Rouxanne Janse Van Rensburg and Kim Moosbacher from Oklahoma Baptist
- On court three, Lazzarotto and Ashley Ramirez have been just as impressive with an 11-2 record and winners of their last four matches
 
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
- St. Edward's comes in with an 8-8 season record, snapping a five-match losing streak Saturday with a 5-4 win over No. 43 Dallas Baptist
- The Hilltoppers are ranked 42nd in the Oracle/ITA national rankings and fourth in the South Central Region 
- Anjali Sampath and Laura Galvan crack the regional singles rankings at 10th and 12th, respectively, playing at No. 1 and 2 singles for SEU
- The Hilltoppers have earned their wins at the bottom of the lineup with Valentina Martinez carrying a team-best 10-3 record playing on court six and Beth Hayward sporting a 9-3 record playing at No. 4 singles
- In doubles, Galvan and Hayward are ranked eighth in the region at No. 1
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Midwestern State has won the last five matches against St. Edward's to lead the all-time series 15-7 dating back to 1999
- The Mustangs have won their last three matchups at home against the Hilltoppers including a pair of sweeps in 2015 for a 3-3 record in Wichita Falls
- St. Edward's last defeated MSU, 6-3, on Feb. 4, 2012 in San Marcos, Texas while the last win at the MSU Tennis Center came on Apr. 10, 2009 with a 5-3 score
 
SCOUTING THE WARHAWKS
Auburn Montgomery comes into the week with a 14-3 record on the season to rank 30th nationally and 10th in the South Region
- The Warhawks are in their first provisional year as an NCAA Division II school, thus not being eligible for postseason events
- AUM has won its last five matches while all three of its losses have come to top-10 programs
- Kelly Southwood leads the Warhawks with a 14-2 dual record playing at No. 1 and 2 singles this season to rank 14th in the region
- Iris Verweij (13-3), Alejandra Gil (12-3) and Anna Rudolfova (12-2) have also posted double-digit singles wins playing at Nos. 3, 5 and 6, respectively
- Southwood and Celine Lenertz have compiled a team-best 15-2 record at No. 2 doubles as winners of their last seven matches while Gil and Verweij have won five straight for a 14-3 record at No. 3

SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS
- Texas A&M-Kingsville has won its last three matches for a 9-5 season record and join Midwestern State at the top of the LSC standings with a 1-0 mark in conference play
- The Javelinas are ranked seventh in the South Central Region rankings
- Lisa Carvajal leads the Javelinas sporting a 7-4 record at No. 1 singles to rank eighth in the region
- Victoria Romanovskaia is 8-6 playing No. 2 for the Javelinas for 20th in the region
- Julia Rauer ties Romanovskaia in wins with an 8-4 record at No. 4 while Erika Larrea has won five straight for a 7-2 mark on court six
- Carvajal and Tabata Lua have joined together for a 7-4 record at No. 2 doubles while Larrea and Viviana Ortiz are winners of five straight for a 5-1 record at No. 3
