@MSUMustangsFC's historic run ends in national quarterfinals

WICHITA FALLS -- No. 1 Midwestern State never trailed in Saturday night's NCAA Division II national quarterfinal at Stang Park.

The Mustangs also didn't lose. In fact, the team will go down as the first unbeaten team in school history finishing with a 20-0-3 mark.

But it will be Cal Poly Pomona who will move on to the Final Four set for Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 at the Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. The Broncos got a pair of equalizing goals from CCAA Player of the Year Sergi Monso, then survived MSU 6-5 in penalty kicks.

"We're disappointed and the guys are heartbroken right now, but you can't deny the great run we had this year," MSU coach Doug Elder said.

The Mustangs opened the season with 10 straight wins, hit a bump with two draws in a three-match stretch before reeling off nine straight victories heading into Saturday's national quarterfinal.

MSU created numerous chances throughout the match but finally cashed in in the 50th minute. Sophomore Alex Dimitriu served a cross from the right wing Sebastian Venegas, who hammered the ball off of the legs of CPP defender Angel Cova and into the net for his fourth goal of the season.

The Broncos (18-5) answered in the 57th minute when Dante Medina ran on to a long pass sprayed down the left channel. He cut the ball into the box and was bumped to the ground from behind by MSU's Koby Sapon-Amoah.

Monso finished with his 20th tally of the season placing the ball straight down the center for 20th goal of the season to level the match at 1-1.

Midwestern regained the lead on senior Scott Doney's 14th goal of the year in the 75th minute. He mastered headed Alex Mullet's cross from the left wing off of the crossbar and into the net for a 2-1 advantage.

Monso tallied his second goal of the match on a give-and-go down the right inside channel with Medina in the 82nd minute to once again level the match.

Midwestern State dominated the run of play in both overtime periods controlling a 4-1 edge in shots to go along with four corner kick chances, but the game would go to penalty kicks.

"I told the guys we were going to go at them. We're not going to play for a tie," Elder said. "I liked the way we attacked them in overtime. I thought we went out and created some good chances. They cleared a couple off of the line and they blocked a few of our shots, but I was proud of the guys for going after them for two 10s and not sitting in."

Both teams knocked in their first five penalties, but the Mustangs blinked first when Jordan Speed's shot found the crossbar on the sixth try.

That set the stage for Kevin Martinez' clincher to the left side of the net.

"There's a lot of luck in PKs," Elder said. "Obviously, the shots have to be good but if the keeper guesses right then you are just living on the edge. The guys did what I asked them to do but it's unfortunate the game is cruel sometimes and it's not always fair. We have to accept that."

The 20 wins this season are the most of any Doug Elder-coached side and the most since the 1995 squad rolled up a 21-5-1 mark.

"We had a great season," senior midfielder Pierre Bocquet said. "We just got unlucky with some of our chances and we just couldn't put it in the back of the net."
