GUNNISON, Colo. -- Trey Kennedy's jumper with three seconds remaining in the second overtime lifted Midwestern State to its first win of the season as the Mustangs outlasted Western State Colorado in the final game of the Comfort Inn Classic Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.
The Mustangs snapped a 10-game skid on the road, while improving to 1-3 on the season with a 123-121 win over Western State.
Senior
Brandon Neel logged a career-best 30 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor with six free throws. He connected on one of two free throws with three seconds left in regulation to force the first overtime.
Kennedy, who logged an MSU personal high of 25 points, came through in the clutch in the first overtime session with a driving layup with four seconds left to force a second extra session, then provided the game winner in the second OT.
MSU's efforts spoiled a career night by Western State's Ben Beauchamp. The senior guard from Louisville, Colo. erupted for 46 points on 15-of-39 shooting with six 3 triples as the Mountaineers overcame a 15-point first half deficit to grab 5-point edge following back-to-back triples by Beauchamp 2 1/2 minutes into the second half.
Midwestern took control in the early stages of the opening half opening up a 29-14 at the 9:01 mark culminating a 21-1 run with a
Romello Walker 3-pointer, but the Mountaineers whittled the lead to two points by intermission.
The closely matched game had 18 ties and 24 lead changes.
Western State fell to 1-3 on the season.
NOTES
- Midwestern State's 123-121 double overtime victory at Western State (Colo.) is the first multiple-overtime game since MSU beat Emporia State (Kan.) 127-124 on Dec. 20, 2007.
- MSU's 123 points are the most since the team scored 127 against Emporia State.
- Senior forward
Josh Huntley logged a season-best 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in his first start for the Mustangs.
- Sophomore
Logan Hicks notched his fourth consecutive double-figure performance with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists versus Western State.
- Senior guard
Devante Pullum scored 10-or-more points for the second time this season going for 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.
- Junior
Wanaah Bail and senior
Nick Powell both eight points and eight rebounds off of the bench.
