THE RUNDOWN
EDMOND, Okla. – No. 3 Midwestern State scored each of its four goals in the second half to salt away 4-1 win over Oklahoma Christian to clinch its fourth unbeaten regular season in program history.
The Mustangs, who close the regular season at 16-0-2, also notched unbeaten marks in 2002 (13-0-4), 2010 (16-0-2) and 2015 (16-0-1).
As back-to-back Heartland Conference champions, MSU is set to host the league's postseason Friday and Sunday at Stang Park. The Mustangs are set face the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal matchup between Texas A&M International and UT Permian Friday night at 7 p.m.
MSU extended its fourth longest unbeaten run to 18, but things weren't going the Mustangs' way through the first 45 minutes.
Oklahoma Christian grasped the lead on Garrett Blume's fifth goal of the season as he headed in a punch out by MSU goalkeeper
Taylor Lampe in the 18th minute.
The Eagles nursed the 1-0 advantage into intermission despite being outshot 7-2, but MSU assistant coach
Michael Meachum's yellow card late in the half seemed to inspire the Mustangs.
Surprisingly,
Scott Doney used his head for the equalizer in the opening minute of the second half off of a cross from freshman
Carlos Flores. It was his team-high 12th goal of the season.
The Mustangs surged ahead on Flores' nicely driven corner kick which was headed in for senior
Pierre Bocquet's eighth goal of the campaign in the 75th minute.
Flores found the back of the net just two minutes later off set up by Bocquet to give MSU's a 3-1 advantage.
Sophomore
Sebastian Venegas crushed a shot from 30 yards out to close the scoring ledger in the 84th minute.
Oklahoma Christian closes the season at 3-12-2 and 1-11-2.
