Burnette, defense stand strong in @MustangsWSoccer's 1-0 shutout of Texas A&M-Commerce

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Sophomore Raven Powell netted the game winner in the 14th minute while senior Courtney Burnette collected 11 saves to help No. 24 Midwestern State outlast a high-shooting performance by Texas A&M-Commerce and earn a season sweep of the Lions in a 1-0 shutout Friday evening at Stang Park.

The Mustangs saw Texas A&M-Commerce (8-3-3, 4-3-1 LSC) total 31 shots on the night, the most against Midwestern State (9-3-1, 4-2-1 LSC) since Incarnate Word tallied 32 in a 1-0 Midwestern State victory on Oct. 10, 2004 in Wichita Falls.

Powell connected on just the second shot of the game for the Mustangs at the 13:39 mark with her third goal and game winner of the season. Sophomore Hanna Mattinson played a ball to freshman Kelly Cannistra on the right side before passing into the middle of the field just outside the box for Powell to send a shot into the right corner past TAMUC keeper Caitlin Duty.

Burnette was sensational in goal for the Mustangs with the fifth double-figure save performance of her career en route to claiming her eighth shutout of the season.

The Mustangs placed three shots on target in eight attempts on the evening, while coming close to a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute as senior Destinee Williamson's attempt hit the middle of the crossbar.
