Mustangs suffer five-set heartbreaker at Texas Woman's

THE RUNDOWN
DENTON, Texas – Despite a career-high 22 kills from Aerielle Edwards and a career-best 59 assists from Kristan Aduddell, Midwestern State fell in a five-set heartbreaker to Texas Woman's Friday evening at Kitty Magee Arena.

In the fifth set, a 6-2 run for Midwestern State (7-7, 3-3 LSC) helped the Mustangs grab a comfortable 10-6 lead and force a Texas Woman's (5-9, 1-3 LSC) timeout. Kills for Addison Semer and Meghan Bettis gave the Mustangs a 12-7 advantage but the Pioneers answered with an 8-0 run to claim a 15-12 win in the fifth set.
 
TWU took a 1-0 lead in the match after totaling 16 kills with just two errors to record a 25-15 win over the Mustangs in set one.
 
Midwestern State evened the contest at 1-1 with Edwards posting six kills and Aduddell dishing out 17 assists to lead the Mustangs to a 25-20 win in the second set. After TWU went on a 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead and force an MSU timeout, the Mustangs responded by scoring the final eight points of the frame to take the set after hitting .500 with 18 kills.
 
In the third set, the Mustangs grabbed a 23-20 advantage following an Edwards kill but the Pioneers came back to even the set at 23 apiece before Sarah Garfield gave MSU set point. A pair of kills from Anna McGee pushed TWU in front at 25-24 before a kill by Courtney Noel gave the Pioneers a 26-24 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Edwards and Meghan Bettis combined for 11 of MSU's 16 kills in the fourth set with Bettis recording six with no errors on 11 swings. The Mustangs jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the frame after Bettis tallied four kills and an ace to help MSU control the momentum early. The Pioneers pulled within two at 22-20 after back-to-back blocks from Noel and Briley Cole but Edwards recorded a couple of kills to help MSU pull out the 25-22 victory to force the decisive fifth set.

*Aerielle Edwards recorded her second 20-kill performance of the season with her career-best 22 kills Friday night
*Edwards notched her first career double-double, adding a team-high 13 digs
*Kristan Aduddell reached 50 assists for the third time this season, all coming in the last five matches, with a career-high 59 assists against Texas Woman's
*Meghan Bettis tallied her team-high fifth double-double of the season with 18 kills and 11 digs, hitting a team-best .429 on the night
*Sarah Garfield recorded her fourth-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs
*Midwestern State finished with a season-high 67 kills and 60 assists
*The Mustangs hit .275 while the Pioneers posted a .288 hitting percentage
