THE RUNDOWN
TOPEKA, Kan. – Midwestern State received a season-high 11 kills from junior outside hitter Aerielle Edwards but it was enough for the Mustangs in the finale of the Washburn Invitational as Missouri Western hit .308 to earn a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-14, 25-23) Saturday afternoon at Lee Arena.

Missouri Western (2-2) used a 10-2 run in the opening set to claim a comfortable lead on the Mustangs before going on to record a 25-15 victory to grab a 1-0 advantage.

After hitting just .028 in the first set, the Midwestern State (1-3) offense rose to a .286 hitting percentage in the second frame, led by Edwards' four kills. However, the Griffons committed just one error in the set while hitting .500 to post a 25-14 victory and move ahead 2-0.

A trio of kills and one block for Edwards helped carry the Mustangs to an early 9-2 lead in the third set. After a Missouri Western timeout, the Griffons crawled back before evening the frame at 13 apiece following a kill from Rachel Friedrichs. The Mustangs moved back in front at 21-18 before MWSU rallied with four-straight points to take the momentum late in the set.
