Mustangs win streak snapped in loss to No. 16 Northwest Missouri

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Midwestern State's six-match win streak came to a halt Saturday evening as the 11th-ranked Mustangs fell to No. 16 Northwest Missouri State, 8-1, in a neutral site matchup at the John A. Bryant Tennis Center.

Northwest Missouri State improved to 15-2 on the season, carrying a perfect 15-0 mark against NCAA Division II opponents, while Midwestern State dropped to 12-5 overall.

Junior Chris Norrie and freshman Radu Popa earned the lone win of the match for Midwestern State with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles to put the Mustangs ahead early at 1-0. However, the Bearcats followed with an upset win at No. 1 with the duo of Alvaro Riveros and Sergi Fontcuberta defeating the 19th-ranked team of senior Kyle Davidson and junior Ramon Toyos, 8-4, to even the match.

The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead into singles play with Romain Boissinot and Aymeric Autones defeating senior Zack Santagate and freshman Dillon Pineda with an 8-6 victory on court two.

NWMSU totaled a pair of straight-set wins on courts two and six to stretch the lead to 4-1 on the Mustangs before Fontcuberta clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) win over Norrie at No. 3 singles.

Pineda took an early lead at No. 4 singles with a 6-3 first set win before Mauro Tete rallied with wins in the second and third sets for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 result.

No. 44 Davidson came just short of picking up his fourth win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season, falling to No. 49 Boissinot, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-8.

Midwestern State continues its road swing Wednesday when the Mustangs take on Division I Abilene Christian in a 5 p.m. match at the Eager Tennis Pavilion in Abilene.
