Mustangs to host Javelinas in final LSC match

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 20 Midwestern State closes out Lone Star Conference play Monday when the Mustangs play host to Texas A&M-Kingsville at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
– Junior Abby White posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Elisa Guillen at No. 6 singles to clinch a 5-4 win for Midwestern State over No. 41 St. Edward's Friday afternoon in Austin
– Midwestern State picked up a big regional win over the Hilltoppers, who appeared just in front of the Mustangs at No. 3 in the first NCAA regional rankings of the season
– The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play before senior Maddie Schorlemmer and freshman Eirini Kontaki earned straight-set wins on the top two courts to make it a 4-1 contest
– The Hilltoppers answered with a pair of three-set wins and a win in straight sets at Nos. 3-5 to even the match at 4-4
 
MUSTANGS FOURTH IN FIRST SET OF NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State appeared at No. 4 in the first set of South Central Regional rankings released by the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Committee Wednesday
– The Mustangs came in behind St. Mary's (Texas), Cameron and St. Edward's while appearing in front of Newman (Kan.) and Tarleton State
– The top four teams in the region will qualify for the NCAA postseason with the regional tournament taking place May 7-10 at select campus sites
– The top two teams out of the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18-21, at the Gates Tennis Center in Denver, Colo.
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
– Midwestern State comes into the week with a 15-7 season record and 11-4 mark against NCAA Division II opponents
– Schorlemmer ranks 27th in the national singles rankings and second in the South Central Region, sporting a 12-7 dual record with an 11-6 mark at No. 1 this season
– The duo of Kontaki and senior Lindsay Nochowicz also appeared in the latest national rankings, moving in at No. 23 in doubles and third in the region with a 12-8 record on the year
– White and senior Lauren Pineda lead the Mustangs in singles wins on the season with 14-3 marks with Pineda carrying an 8-2 mark at No. 4 and White holding an 8-1 record at No. 6
– Pineda also teams up with sophomore Amy Clifton to rank sixth in the region as MSU's No. 2 doubles team with a 14-2 record on the year
– Freshman Greta Lazzarotto is just behind Pineda and White with a 13-9 slate to rank 14th in the region while appearing primarily on courts two and three
– Lazzarotto leads the Mustangs with a 20-2 doubles record this season, carrying an 11-match win streak with Schorlemmer at No. 3
– Kontaki, ranked 17th in the region, holds an 11-9 record for the Mustangs at the No. 2 position
– Rounding out the singles lineup this season is Nochowicz, who carries a 10-5 record with a 5-4 mark at No. 5 singles
 
SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS
– Texas A&M-Kingsville enters the week with a 5-14 record on the season with six of those losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents
– Mariaxi Herrera leads the Javelinas with a 13-6 mark at No. 1 singles to rank eighth in the South Central Region
– Marija Dimitrovska has also reached double-digit wins this season with a 12-7 dual match record as the No. 2 player for TAMUK
– The duo appear at No. 8 in the region in doubles with a 4-5 record
– Herrera is also 7-4 with partner Erika Larrea at No. 2 doubles while Dimitrovska is 6-3 with Madi Gomez at No. 3
– Head coach Autumn Williams is in her second season at Texas A&M-Kingsville, leading the Javelinas to a 13-11 record in 2015
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
– Midwestern State carries a perfect 5-0 all-time record into Monday's meeting with Texas A&M-Kingsville
– The Mustangs earned a 9-0 sweep over the Javelinas last season in Kingsville
– Midwestern is 2-0 at home against TAMUK with an 8-1 win in 2013 and a 9-0 victory in 2014

MUSTANGS JUMP TO NO. 20 IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
– Midwestern State climbed two spots to No. 20 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Division II national rankings released Mar. 23 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
– The Mustangs also stayed at No. 3 in the latest South Central Region rankings released on Mar. 16, coming in behind No. 12 St. Mary's and No. 17 Cameron
 
SENIORS MAKING MOST OF FINAL SEASON
– Seniors Lauren Pineda and Maddie Schorlemmer will both end their Midwestern State careers as two of the top wins leaders in program history, having already reached 100 wins while donning the Maroon and Gold 
– Pineda became the seventh Mustang in program history to earn career win No. 100 on Mar. 13 after a pair of victories over Colorado Mesa while Schorlemmer accomplished the feat on Apr. 6 with two wins over Tarleton State
– Pineda climbed into sole possession of fifth on the all-time wins list following two wins over Dallas Baptist on Apr. 2
– The Allen native currently sits with a 118-43 career record (.733) with a 70-26 doubles mark and 48-17 singles record to rank fourth on the doubles wins list and seventh in singles
– Schorlemmer moved into seventh on the all-time list after her wins over Tarleton State, currently carrying a record of 106-37 (.741)
– The Argyle native is seventh in career doubles wins at MSU with a 61-17 record while ranking ninth in singles with a 45-20 mark
– Lacey Wuthrich is the all-time wins leader at MSU, compiling a 138-44 record from 2002-05
– Wuthrich is followed by Emilee Black (135-47) and Brooke Gray (131-64), who both played for Midwestern State from 2000-03, and Sara Butler (129-27), who set the school record for winning percentage (.827) from 1999-2002
– Rounding out the 100-win club is Marsha Meyer (111-79), who suited up for the then-Lady Indians from 1998-2001, and Taylor Coffman (100-72), who played from 2012-15
 
LINN EARNS WIN NO. 400
– Head coach Scott Linn received a memorable win No. 400 last May when the MSU women's tennis team upset No. 12 California (Pa.) in the NCAA Sweet 16
– Linn enters his sixth season leading the MSU men's and women's tennis programs, guiding the Mustangs to a combined seven postseason appearances since taking over the programs in 2010-11
– Linn has posted a 91-43 record (.679) with the men's team while recording a 98-47 mark (.676) with the women for a combined 189-90 (.677)
– Since 1997-98, Linn has compiled a 428-269 (.614) career record in 15 seasons as a men's head coach (233-153, .604) and 12 seasons as a women's coach (195-116, .627), averaging close to 15 wins a season
– Prior to MSU, Linn served head coaching stints at Science & Arts. (Okla.), Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and Florida Southern while serving as a men's assistant coach at his alma mater, East Central (Okla.), and Indiana
 
LOOKING AHEAD
– Midwestern State will host regional foe Arkansas-Fort Smith in its final regular season home match of the season Friday at 10 a.m. at the MSU Tennis Center
– Prior to the match, the program will honor the careers of seniors Lauren Pineda, Maddie Schorlemmer and Lindsay Nochowicz
