Mustangs fall short to No. 17 Cameron in hard-fought battle

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Samantha Wood rallied from a 3-0 deficit and fended off six match points to come away with a 7-5 third set victory and carry No. 17 Cameron to a 5-4 win over No. 20 Midwestern State Tuesday evening.

After dropping a 6-4 first set, senior Lindsay Nochowicz forced a deciding third set at No. 5 singles with a 7-5 victory over Wood in the second set. The final set was moved to the Wichita Falls Country Club after rain hit the MSU Tennis Center at the conclusion of the second set. Nochowicz opened up a 3-0 advantage in the third before Wood closed the gap by winning the next two games. Wood then held off six match points at 5-3 before taking the next four games to help Cameron (14-2) snap a four-match losing skid to the Mustangs.

Midwestern State (14-6) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Senior Lauren Pineda and sophomore Amy Clifton put the Mustangs on the board with an 8-5 win on court two to even the match at 1-1 after the Aggies had earned an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Senior Maddie Schorlemmer and freshman Greta Lazzarotto then propelled the Mustangs in front with their 11th-straight win at No. 3 with an 8-3 win to improve to 18-2 on the season.

Cameron claimed a 4-2 lead midway through singles play with wins on the top three courts before junior Abby White posted her seventh-straight victory at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-4 result. Lazzarotto then evened the match at 4-4 with a three-set triumph at No. 4 singles with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Angie Torres, the fifth-ranked player in the South Central Region.

Midwestern State returns to action tomorrow at 5 p.m. with a match against NCAA Division I Abilene Christian at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
