Pineda records 100th career victory in Mustangs sweep of CMU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State senior Lauren Pineda recorded her 100th career win Sunday afternoon to lead the 22nd-ranked Mustangs to their fifth-straight win and third consecutive sweep in a 9-0 victory over Colorado Mesa at the MSU Tennis Center.

Pineda became just the seventh Mustang in Midwestern State women's tennis history to reach the 100-win plateau, joining Lacey Wuthrich (2002-05), Emilee Black (2000-03), Brooke Gray (2000-03), Sara Butler (1999-2002), Marsha Meyer (1998-2001) and Taylor Coffman (2012-15).

Pineda, now 100-37 for her career, moves into a tie for sixth on the all-time wins list alongside Coffman. The Allen native earned wins at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles Sunday to propel Midwestern State to 6-1 on the season. She is now a combined 13-0 this year with a 6-0 record in singles and 7-0 mark in doubles play.

The Mustangs cruised to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play, allowing Colorado Mesa (10-6) to come away with just three games.

Eirini Kontaki tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles before Pineda clinched the match for the Mustangs on court four with a 6-1, 6-0 result. At the top of the lineup, 37th-ranked Maddie Schorlemmer moved to 4-0 at the No. 1 position before Greta Lazzarotto added to the MSU lead with a super tiebreaker win at No. 2, rallying from a first set defeat. Abby White and Alexis Arrieta capped off the 9-0 sweep for MSU at the bottom of the lineup.

Midwestern State continues its homestand Wednesday at 1 p.m. when the Mustangs host No. 10 Southwest Baptist (Mo.) at the MSU Tennis Center. The Bearcats spoiled a historic 2015 season for the Mustangs last year with a 5-4 win in the NCAA quarterfinals.
