ADA, Okla. – The No. 22 Midwestern State women's tennis team opened up the 2016 season in dominant fashion Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs recorded a 9-0 sweep on the road over East Central.

Midwestern State opened the match winning all three doubles matches handily to take a 3-0 lead on East Central (1-2) heading into singles play.

Freshman Greta Lazzarotto started off with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Gloria Mayorga before freshman Eirini Kontaki clinched the match for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 over Alex Makashov, the 15th-ranked player in the Central Region.

Sophomore Amy Clifton and senior Maddie Schorlemmer stretched the MSU lead to 7-0 as Clifton downed Anna Garcia, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 while the 37th-ranked Schorlemmer rallied from a first set defeat to take down Julia Municoy, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5, on court three.

Junior Abby White and senior Lauren Pineda concluded the match at the bottom of the lineup with White posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Srijita Ghosh at the No. 5 position before Pineda totaled the final point of the match for the Mustangs with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Veronica Mijares at No. 6.

Midwestern State will take a break from competition before hosting Tyler Junior College in its home opener Friday, Mar. 4 at 2 p.m. at the MSU Tennis Center.
