THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State begins its run at its first Heartland Conference Tournament title Friday when the top-seeded Mustangs play host to No. 4 seed Newman (Kan.) in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at MSU Soccer Field.

The winner between MSU and Newman will move on to face either No. 2 St. Edward's or No. 3 West Texas A&M in the Heartland Conference Championship Sunday at 1 p.m. at MSU Soccer Field. The Hilltoppers and Buffs will square off in the first semifinal Friday at 5 p.m. at MSU Soccer Field.

SIX MUSTANGS NAMED ALL-HEARTLAND; ELDER TABBED COACH OF THE YEAR
- Midwestern State matched a league-high six All-Heartland Conference selections while picking up three individual honors with senior midfielder Gabriel Cavalcante being named the Heartland Conference Player of the Year, senior forward Christian Okeke earning Heartland Offensive Player of the Year accolades and Doug Elder being tabbed the Heartland Conference Coach of the Year
- Joining Cavalcante and Okeke on the All-Heartland Conference First Team was senior midfielder Flavio Guzman and junior defender Jordan Speed 
- Senior defender Antonio Hernandez and junior midfielder Pierre Bocquet rounded out the MSU all-conference selections with second team honors
- Elder collected his eighth conference coach of the year honor since taking over the MSU men's soccer program in 2000
- Elder was named coach of the year in the Southwest Soccer Conference from 2005-08 and in the Lone Star Conference in 2002 and 2010-11

LAST TIME ON THE PITCH
- Midwestern State closed out the regular season on a 10-game win streak following a pair of home wins over Newman and Oklahoma Christian to claim the conference regular season crown with a 15-2-1 overall record and 13-1-0 mark in the league
- The Mustangs avenged its lone conference loss of the season to Newman with a 4-0 victory over the Jets to clinch the Heartland regular season title and earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament
- Midwestern followed with a 4-1 win over OC on Senior Day with six seniors recording points on the day

WINNING STREAKS
- Midwestern State's current 10-game winning streak ties for the ninth-longest in program history with the Mustangs also winning 10 straight in 2015
- The Mustangs set a school record with 15 consecutive wins during the 2008 season with MSU advancing to the national quarterfinals

MUSTANGS CRACK TOP 10 IN NATIONAL POLL 
- Midwestern State moved inside the top 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II poll for the first time in eight weeks at No. 8 Wednesday afternoon
- Midwestern State earned its highest ranking since coming in at No. 9 in the first regular season poll on Sept. 6
- The Mustangs also appeared in the top 10 in the preseason poll at No. 7

MUSTANGS TOP SOUTH CENTRAL REGION RANKINGS
- Midwestern State remained at No. 1 in the final South Central Region rankings released by the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Committee Wednesday afternoon
- The top four teams in the region will advance to the 38-team NCAA Tournament field, beginning Nov. 12-13 at select campus sites
- The Mustangs were followed by St. Edward's, Colorado Mesa, Regis (Colo.), West Texas A&M and Metro State (Colo.) in the rankings
- The NCAA will announce the field Monday at 5:30 p.m. (CT) with a selection show on NCAA.com

A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
- Midwestern State ranks in the top 20 nationally in 11 statistical categories, averaging 2.56 goals per game (19th) while carrying a 0.49 goals against average (4th) this season
- The Mustangs have recorded 10 clean sheets on the season to tie for the fifth most in the country
- Of the nine goals allowed by MSU this season, just three have come in the run of play -- two from MSU's season-opening 3-2 win at Fort Lewis (Colo.) and one in the 4-1 win over Oklahoma Christian in the regular season finale
- Opponents have earned other scores off three own goals, two penalty kicks and a goal after a restart
- Senior Gabriel Cavalcante leads the Mustangs with 20 points this season with seven goals and a team-best six assists
- Cavalcante ranks 15th nationally with five game-winning goals on the year
- Senior Christian Okeke ranks second for the Mustangs in scoring this season with 18 points, matching Cavalcante with seven goals while adding four assists
- Senior Noah Fazekas has posted nine shutouts on the year to rank fifth in the country with a 0.50 goals against average and 11th with a .833 save percentage

NO GOAL ZONE
- Midwestern State's 10 shutouts this season are the most for the program since 2011 when the Mustangs totaled 11 clean sheets
- During Midwestern State's 10-game win streak, the Mustangs have recorded eight shutouts 
- Oklahoma Christian snapped a 598:31 shutout streak for the Mustangs defense in the regular season finale on Oct. 29 with Ante Susic's goal in the 50th minute
- The Mustangs defense has held opponents to three or fewer shots on goal in 13 of their 18 games this season

SCOUTING THE JETS
- Newman enters the Heartland Conference Tournament with a 10-7-2 record on the season, earning the fourth seed in the postseason following a 7-5-2 mark in conference action
- The Jets defeated No. 5 Rogers State (Okla.), 2-1, in the quarterfinals Tuesday after falling to the Hillcats, 1-0, in the regular season finale just three days prior
- Sophomore Carlos Rubio Garcia leads Newman with five goals and four assists for 14 points
- In goal, senior Blake Andrews sports a 1.10 goals against average and .741 save percentage in 13 starts for the Jets
 
ELDER REACHES 250 CAREER WINS
- Head coach Doug Elder recorded his 250th career win at the helm of the MSU men's soccer program in the win over Newman on Oct. 27 at MSU Soccer Field
- The five-time region coach of the year carries a career mark of 251-54-30 and sits as the winningest NCAA Division II men's soccer coach with at least 10 seasons of coaching with a .794 winning percentage
- Elder became MSU's all-time winningest men's soccer coach last season in an 8-1 win over Southern Nazarene (Okla.), surpassing his former coach Howard Patterson with his 222nd career win
 
WELCOME TO OUR HOUSE
- Dating back to the 1979 season, Midwestern State was won nearly 85 percent of its games at MSU Soccer Field with a record of 331-50-27
- The Mustangs come into the Heartland Conference Tournament with a 7-1-0 slate at home this season, suffering their lone defeat in the home opener to Northeastern State (Okla.), 1-0, on Sept. 12
- MSU posted a program-best 15 home wins in 1995 while hosting the NAIA sectional and regional playoffs
- From Nov. 17, 2007 to Sept. 9, 2012, the Mustangs recorded a school record 44-match unbeaten streak at MSU Soccer Field
 
WINNING SEASONS
- Midwestern State extended its winning season streak to 19 in 2016, the longest active streak in NCAA Division II and tied for eighth in the history of Division II men's soccer
- The Mustangs have posted an impressive 42 winning seasons in the program's 45 years of existence and just one losing season since the 1973 season (1997)
- MSU carries an all-time record of 636-208-64 (.736)
- Doug Elder has led Midwestern to double-digit wins in each of his 17 seasons with eight 15-plus win campaigns
