THE RUNDOWN

CANYON, Texas – Senior midfielder Katie Huff delivered her first collegiate goal at the right time with a penalty kick in overtime to lift Midwestern State to a 3-2 road victory, spoiling Senior Day and denying the South Central Region's fifth-ranked team West Texas A&M an outright Lone Star Conference title.

Less than five minutes into the extra period a foul was called on West Texas A&M's Khadisha Debesette to set up an opportunity for a Midwestern State golden goal. Huff lined up for her first career penalty kick before sending her attempt past goalkeeper Courtney Dippel to record the 3-2 win at the 94:53 mark.

Midwestern State (11-5-2, 8-4-0 LSC) closed out the regular season on a four-game winning streak including a pair of regionally-ranked wins in that span.

Senior forward Nicole Coetzer led the Mustangs offense in regulation, tallying her first multiple-goal performance of her career.

In the 13th minute, Coetzer gave the Mustangs an early advantage with a strike off Katie Huff's corner kick for a 1-0 lead.

West Texas A&M (11-5-0, 9-3-0 LSC) netted the equalizer just before halftime with Marlene van Mourik recording her seventh goal of the season with a shot from 20 yards out that sailed over the outstretched hands of junior goalkeeper Courtney Burnette in the 42nd minute.

The Lady Buffs took their first lead of the contest just minutes into the second half with a goal from Khadidra Debesette for a 2-1 score in the 49th minute.

Coetzer tallied her seventh goal of the season with the equalizer in the 55th minute with a strike from inside the box off an assist from junior forward Destinee Williamson.

The Mustangs made several great defensive plays down the stretch to send the game into overtime with sophomore defender Imani Morlock making a goal-saving play in front of the net and Burnette collecting a save on a Khadidra Debesette header.

LSC TOURNAMENT
The Mustangs earn the No. 3 seed in next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament and will face No .6 seed Eastern New Mexico in the LSC quarterfinals on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Lion Soccer Field in Commerce.

Texas A&M-Commerce and West Texas A&M finished as LSC co-champions after finishing with 27 points apiece with 9-3-0 records. The Lions claimed the No. 1 seed using the goal differential tiebreaker as the two teams split their regular season series.

QUOTE OF THE GAME
"We made progress again today. The team was mentally very tough, and fought to earn a result from behind. We finally scored on a set piece, which we have trained hard to do. Katie Huff stepping up to take the PK and score her first collegiate goal was brave. This team is brave, and they make the coaching staff proud." - Head coach Damian Clarke
