Mustangs earn Saturday split with sweep of St. Edward's

THE RUNDOWN
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State earned a weekend split following a 3-0 sweep of St. Edward's in non-conference action Saturday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
 
Midwestern State (9-12) carried the momentum early in the match, building a 6-2 lead on the Hilltoppers following a Christy Carruth ace and kill by Sarah Garfield. St. Edward's (8-12) could only pull as close as three in the frame before the Mustangs stretched their lead to 10 following a 5-0 run capped off by a Garfield ace. The fourth kill of the set for Aerielle Edwards gave the Mustangs the opening set with a 25-14 victory as the Maroon and Gold hit .343 with 13 kills and just one error.
 
The Mustangs opened up an 8-2 lead in the second set to force an early timeout for the Hilltoppers. An 11-3 run for SEU pushed the visitors into the lead at 13-11 before MSU evened up the set. The Mustangs used a 5-0 run to regain the momentum late and carry out a 25-18 win in set two behind Erin Richburg's team-best five kills.
 
Sarah Garfield recorded nine of her team-high 16 kills while Kristan Aduddell came in at setter to dish out 16 assists to lead the Mustangs to a 25-14 win in set three. Midwestern went on a 7-1 run to force an SEU timeout and pull away from the Hilltoppers midway through the frame. Garfield recorded four of MSU's final six points to help the Mustangs record the sweep.

*Sarah Garfield finished with a season-best 16 kills while recording her sixth career double-double with 12 digs
*Kiley Beaver also recorded double digits in kills with 11 while hitting a team-high .435 percentage
*Sarah Glawe finished with 25 assists in two sets of action
*Midwestern State hit .279 for the match, its third-highest hitting percentage this season, while holding St. Edward's to an opponent-low .027 attacking clip
