Mustangs come up short to No. 21 Regis, 9-8

LUBBOCK, Texas – An eighth-inning walk-off single by junior first baseman Carlie Sexton completed a late comeback for No. 21 Regis in a 9-8 win over Midwestern State in the final game of the Lady Chaps Invitational Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.

In a 4-4 ballgame, Midwestern State (2-3) opened up a sizeable advantage in the fifth inning after junior left fielder Taylor Bermudes blasted a pitch down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Mustangs an 8-4 lead.

Regis (4-1) was able to trim away at its deficit in the final three innings before forcing extras when freshman pinch hitter Macy Cox singled through the right side to even the contest at 8-8 after seven.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Mustangs were unable to plate a run in the top half of the inning before Sexton's single completed the five-run comeback for the Rangers.

A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for MSU in the top of the first before junior designated hitter Baylee Voigt sent one down the left field line to score two runs and put the Mustangs ahead early.

Back-to-back doubles from junior pitcher Erin Knox and Voigt added another score for the Mustangs in the third to move in front at 3-0. Voigt finished 3-for-4 while matching Bermudes with a team-best four RBI.

Regis plated its first two runs in the third with a fielder's choice and double cutting the MSU lead to 3-2.

However, another Voigt double brought in a run for the Mustangs in the fourth, scoring Knox who singled earlier in the inning, for a 4-2 MSU lead.

Prior to Bermudes' grand slam, the Rangers knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth after taking advantage of an MSU infield throwing error with two unearned runs in the frame.

Senior pitcher Nicole Hull (3-0) earned the win for the Rangers with four strikeouts while giving up five runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Peyton Helton (0-2) took the loss with 2.0 innings in the circle, allowing five hits for two runs with one strikeout.

Regis out-hit the Mustangs 14-9 with junior center fielder Alyssa Finger going 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Rangers.

Knox and senior center fielder Haley Howerton were named to the Lady Chaps Invitational All-Tournament Team. Howerton led the Mustangs at the plate on the weekend, hitting .550 with 11 hits and six runs in MSU's season-opening tournament. Knox finished with a .471 batting average with eight hits and seven runs, recording three extra base hits with two homers and a double.

Midwestern State returns to the field next weekend with the three-day Gulf Coast Invitational (Feb. 5-7) at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex in Gulf Shores, Ala.
