DENTON, Texas – Despite forcing a season-high 25 turnovers, Midwestern State came up short on the offensive end with a 23.4 shooting percentage (15-of-64) in a 71-45 setback to Texas Woman's in the Mustangs' Lone Star Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.
Texas Woman's (12-2, 2-0 LSC) secured its 10th-straight victory Saturday with junior post Erin Maxwell leading the charge for the Pioneers with 20 points, nine rebounds and six blocks. Maxwell recorded 16 points, six rebounds and all six of her blocks in the first half to help TWU jump out to a commanding 33-16 lead at the break.
The Pioneers finished the afternoon shooting 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field and connecting on 70.4 percent (19-of-27) of their free throws.
Midwestern State (1-10, 0-1 LSC) hung close throughout a majority of the first half with junior post Jennifer Sissel pacing the Mustangs with five points through 20 minutes of action. Facing a 23-11 deficit midway through the second period, Sissel knocked down MSU's lone three-pointer of the half before adding another basket to pull the Mustangs within eight at 24-16 with 3:50 to play.
However, the Pioneers ended the half with all the momentum by going on a 9-0 spurt to claim a 17-point advantage at the half.
TWU continued to stretch the lead early in the third quarter with junior guard Kenesha Saygo draining a pair of triples to help the Pioneers begin the half on an 8-0 run to make it 41-16.

Jacquar Westbrooks helped the Mustangs trim down a 29-point deficit midway through the third quarter by scoring eight-straight points with a couple of three-pointers for a 47-26 score with 2:43 to play.
Midwestern was unable to pull closer than 20 points the remainder of the contest with Texas Woman's coming away with the 71-45 victory.
Westbrooks notched her fifth-straight double-figure scoring performance with a career-high 22 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Sissel added seven points for the Mustangs.
While forcing a season high in turnovers, the Mustangs recorded a season-low 12 turnovers on their end. MSU came away with 14 steals on the day with six different players collecting two steals apiece.
Midwestern State closes out its six-game road swing Wednesday with a trip to Canyon to take on No. 2 West Texas A&M at 5:30 p.m.
