Veterans lead charge as Mustangs down rival Tarleton State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Junior post Jennifer Sissel posted her second-straight double-double with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead three Mustangs in double figures as Midwestern State put together an 8-0 run in the final 3:20 to defeat rival Tarleton State 56-52 in front of 2,379 fans Wednesday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Sissel was joined in double figures by senior guard Kathryn Odom, who knocked in a career-high 14 points and seven boards, while sophomore guard Whitney Taylor finished with 14 points to lead Midwestern State (3-11, 2-2 LSC) to its second-straight victory.

It was another quick start for the Mustangs Wednesday night as the Maroon and Gold jumped out to a 12-2 advantage following an Odom jumper with 3:43 to play in the opening period. Sissel knocked down a jumper with 2:26 remaining to give MSU its largest lead of the contest at 11 points before taking a 16-9 lead after one.

Tarleton State's (8-7, 2-3 LSC) offense came alive in the second quarter after junior guard Bailey Wipff hit a three-pointer to pull the TexAnns within three at 18-15 with 7:16 left in the half. The Mustangs limited TSU's leading scorer to 2-of-12 from the floor and six points below her season average with eight.

The Mustangs built their lead back up to double figures after Sissel drained a three-pointer midway through the quarter for a 26-16 contest. However, Tarleton closed out the half on a 10-2 spurt after senior guard Raven McGrath hit a triple for a 28-26 MSU lead at halftime.

Midwestern was able to stay in front of the TexAnns until the 8:18 mark in the fourth quarter with a free throw by senior post Breanna Fuller knotting the game for the first time at 43 apiece. Sissel and Taylor propelled the Mustangs back in front at 47-43 before Tarleton claimed a 52-48 advantage with just under four minutes to play after four TexAnns combined for a 9-1 run.

The trio of Odom, Sissel and Taylor combined for MSU's final eight points in the closing minutes to seal the rivalry win.

The Mustangs shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) for the night while holding TSU to 30.9 shooting (17-of-55) from the floor.

MSU out-rebounded the TexAnns by a margin of 45-35 with Sissel's 14 being a team-high while senior forward Katie Brown pulled down a career-high 11 boards.

Tarleton was led by Wipff, McGrath and junior forward Ikpeaku Iwobi with eight points each.

Midwestern State returns to Lone Star Conference action Saturday for a 4 p.m. tipoff against Texas A&M-Commerce at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
