WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State women's soccer team earned their first win of the young season Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout victory over Colorado Mesa at MSU Soccer Field.
"I thought we improved on what was a pretty good performance on Friday," said head coach
Damian Clarke. "There are still a lot of things to improve on. I don't think we kept the ball as well as we will at some point, but the ideas that we're beginning to put together are good."
A first half goal by senior defender
Alex Edwards was all the Mustangs (1-1) needed to take down the Mavericks (0-2).
"When you think about that first goal, it really came from
Callie Briseno in the wide midfield earning that corner kick for us," Clarke said. "Getting the ball deep enough to create those problems is where it starts. Having a center back that's capable of doing what
Alex Edwards does is a huge asset."
In the 38th minute, a header by Edwards found the net off a corner kick from redshirt senior defender
Carina Dunnahoo to put the Mustangs up 1-0.
Midwestern added to its lead late in the second half as junior forward
Aly Wade delivered a ball into the middle of the box to find junior defender
Abbey Barnum. Barnum fired past CMU goalkeeper Janelle Richmond-Buccola to give MSU a 2-0 advantage in the 74th minute.
The Mustangs' final goal of the day came in the 83rd minute with a score from Wade. Freshman defender
Imani Morlock dribbled down the field before passing over to Wade, who sent a shot into the net from 30 yards out to extend the MSU lead.
"Abbey had a great run inside the box to score the second goal," Clarke said. "Then having a forward (
Aly Wade) pick her head up and realize she had an open goal, that's great awareness from someone that is used to playing in the midfield."
Midwestern led 10-1 in corners on the afternoon, creating several scoring opportunities throughout the match. The Mustangs also led the Mavericks in shots by a 16-11 margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Burnette (1-1) earned the win for the Mustangs, collecting three saves in a complete game effort.
Midwestern travels to Colorado next weekend to take on two teams from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mustangs first face UC-Colorado Springs on Friday before wrapping up the weekend Sunday with a match against Western State.
