COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior midfielder
Morgan Hannon found the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to lift the Midwestern State women's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory Friday night over 13th-ranked UC-Colorado Springs.
The Mustangs (2-1-0) earned their first road win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the 2013 season when they defeated No. 24 Texas A&M-Commerce, 3-2.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Burnette (2-1-0) collected her second clean sheet of the season, picking up eight saves with several crucial ones down the stretch.
In the 34th minute, sophomore defender Bethany Leliefeld missed a chance to put UCCS (2-1-0) on top, hitting the post on a penalty kick to keep the contest scoreless.
"It was a huge momentum shift," said head coach
Damian Clarke. "They (UCCS) played very well after that. When it comes down to it, Courtney (Burnette) ensured that we earned the win at the end of regulation. She made some critical saves."
Following the missed opportunity for the Mountain Lions, the Mustangs put together a string of shots as the momentum shifted to the visitors. Hannon placed a shot on goal in the 37th minute but UCCS goalkeeper Brandi Arsenault kept Midwestern off the scoreboard.
In the 63rd minute, junior midfielder
Liz Navarette set up an ensuing penalty kick for the Mustangs after dribbling and getting kicked inside the box.
After Hannon converted the penalty kick, Burnette collected four saves in the final 20 minutes of play to help the Mustangs record the upset win.
The Mustangs attacked the UCCS defense in the opening 15 minutes of the first half, firing five shots with shots on goal coming from sophomore forward
Destinee Williamson and junior forward
Aly Wade.
In the 55th minute, a corner kick from redshirt senior defender
Carina Dunnahoo set up a shot by senior defender
Alex Edwards, but Edwards' shot went high of the goal to keep the match at 0-0.
For the game, UCCS led 17-16 in shots and had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
With the first of six-straight road matches under their belt, the Mustangs travel to Gunnison to take on Western State (Colo.) in a 2 p.m. match Sunday at Gateway Field.
"We felt like we could come in and have a good chance at a win (at UCCS)," Clarke said. "We also know that if we don't come out on Sunday and get a win it could take a lot out of this one."
